Track & Field's John Maka is the winner of this year's Male Hornet Award…nominated by coaches, the honor is awarded to one male and female student-athlete that best exemplify the spirit of a Hornet with their sportsmanship, community service and intangibles that make them a great teammate.
John Maka, Throws
• Completed his fourth season with the track and field program
• A first team all-Big Sky Conference selection after placing second at the Big Sky Championships in the discuss
• Works on campus for the Sacramento State Police Department, assisting students, staff, faculty and visitors while on campus
• Overcame a horrific motorcycle accident last spring where he needed major shoulder surgery that kept him out of training for nine months. Was told by doctors he would never compete again
• Rehabbed the maximum number of hours, and returned to throw a personal-best 179-00 in the discuss at last month's Big Sky Championships - a mark which is fourth best in program history
• A great ambassador for the program, Maka gives tours of campus to recruits and their families
• When Maka isn't competing or training, he is constantly cheering on his teammates at practices and meets
• Recognized for his stewardship and dedication to the program at the team's end of season banquet
