BASEBALL’S JP SMITH NAMED SACRAMENTO STATE’S MALE FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR

Baseball's JP Smith has been named the Sacramento State Male Freshman of the Year. A native of West Sacramento, Smith was a first team all-Western Athletic Conference selection, and a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American…hit .339 to go along with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs…slugged .632 and posted a 1.010 ops…14 home runs matched teammate Wehiwa Aloy for the most by a freshman in the program's Div. I era…that included a pair of multi-home run games as well as a pair of grand slams…had a team-high 16-game hitting streak…had a career-best five RBIs in a road win over nationally ranked Stanford.

Wehiwa Aloy (Baseball) -
The Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, and an all-WAC second team honoree…finished the regular season among the top 10 in the league in 11 different categories while ranking 12th in the NCAA in hits, 14th in runs scored, and 20th in total bases…finished with a .376 average and a 1.089 ops, scoring 69 runs, slugging 14 home runs and driving in 46…tied the program's Div. I record for most home runs by a freshman…69 runs score are second best in school history.

Edgar Guerra (Soccer) - An all-Big West Conference honorable mention selection and an all-freshman team honoree…picked up a pair of Big West Freshman of the Week awards…made 10 appearances in net for the Hornets, and nine starts…ended the year with a 6-3-1 overall record and a 1.26 goals against average…ranked fourth in the league in saves per game (3.60) and fifth in both goals against average and save percentage.

Zach Mate (Golf) - Played in 10 tournaments, finishing the year with a stroke average of 74.86 in 29 rounds…finished 10th at the Big Sky Conference Championship…tied for seventh while playing as an individual at the Chico State Invitational behind a score of 73-70-66-209…the final round score and 54-hole total were his best of the year…recorded three rounds in the 60s and had six rounds at, or below par.

Nathan Mejia (Football) - Started all 13 games at center, and helped the Hornets to a 12-1 overall record, 8-0 in league, a Big Sky Conference championship, and the program's first-ever FCS playoff win…named Freshman All-America by Stats Perform and HERO Sports…earned second team all-Big Sky Conference honors…part of an offensive line which set the school record with 3,358 rushing yards and 5.4 yards per carry.
