Sacramento State’s HBCU-Inspired Drumline Auditions Information
Thank you for your interest in Sacramento State’s HBCU-inspired drumline! Auditions will be held soon and those interested should email
drumline@csus.edu.
This drumline will be different from any other type of drumline you’ve seen in that it is more of a party atmosphere where drummers are expected to not only proficiently play while having fun but also be able to dance. An example of the type of drumline being formed can be found
HERE.
The drumline will be directed by Mr. James Van Buren (affectionately known as “Mr. V”) who has successfully directed both the Grant High Drumline but also the Sacramento Kings Drumline. Further instruction will be provided by sdjmalik (Jabril Malik) – a world-renowned percussionist, music producer, musical artist, educator and more. Check out sdjmalik’s welcome message which can be found
HERE.
Individuals interested in trying out will be scored on the following metrics:
1) Ability to perform the seven basic drum rudiments
- Single Stroke Roll
- Double Stroke Roll
- Single Paradiddle
- Double Paradiddle
- Para-diddle-diddle
- Triplets
- Flam Accent
2) Ability to perform the piece “Show Stopper” either by ear or sheet music
For the audition, a bass drum, snare drum and set of quads will be provided. Drummers will be expected to perform the piece on at least one drum. Ability to perform on different drums can raise your score. The “Show Stopper” piece has been provided with these instructions in both audio form and in sheet music.
3) Ability to Perform and Dance
As noted above, Sacramento State’s HBCU-inspired drumline is a very different type of drumline than seen on campus before. This drumline is one that provides a party atmosphere for those in attendance. Drummers will be expected to dance and proficiently play while having fun. Watch the VIDEO and learn the steps.
4) Ability to showcase your improvisational skills
At the heart of an HBCU-inspired drumline is the ability to improvise. Auditioners will be expected to demonstrate their improvisational skills. In short – show us what you got!
5) Q & A – tell us about yourself
Following your demonstrations, you’ll be able to tell us about yourself and showcase your personality, ability to communicate, attitude and why you want to be a part of this new drumline.
The Sacramento State HBCU-inspired drumline will consist of approximately 10-15 members and practice dates and times will be determined once the drumline members have been selected. The drumline performs at select athletic events and select campus and community service events throughout the year. Individuals who have been selected to be a member of the drumline will be informed via email on Sunday, September 8th.
Should you have any questions, feel free to email drumline@csus.edu.
