WOMEN FINISH FIFTH, MEN EIGHTH AT BIG SKY OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Hornets set three school top 10s during final day of meet

GREELEY, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's and women's track and field teams concluded their regular seasons by recording three school top 10 marks and 12 top five finishes at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships on Saturday.

The Hornet women finished in fifth place while the men took eighth. Northern Arizona swept both team titles with 182 points from the women and 190.5 from the men. Montana State (106) and Weber State (87) finished second and third in the women's standings while Idaho and Weber State did so for the men.

The Hornet women posted a school top 10 mark in the first running event of the day as Ava Fitzgerald, Daysha Ford, Kameryn Brown and Kacyra Simmons combined to run 45.86 in the 4x100 relay. That time placed the team ninth in school history and third at the meet to earn all-Big Sky honors.

The women's 4xr400 team also finished third and claimed all-league accolades in the final women's race of the meet. The team, which was comprised of Sarah Collier, Asiah Fields, Mia Lawrence and Alyssa Brewer ran a season-best 3:45.78.

Winds remained high on Saturday, preventing marks from the sprints and jumps to count towards school records. However, most wind readings were below 4.0 meters per second which is the allowable to count towards qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor First Round in two weeks. Freshman Ava Fitzgerald had a huge improvement in her time with a 100-hurdles time of 13.49 (wind 3.7) to finish second in the meet. Fellow freshman Tia Outlaw was fifth in 13.82 while Brown was sixth in 13.92 to also score points for the team.

Daysha Ford was third in the 400 with a time of 54.49 which was just .02 seconds off her season best. She was also eighth in the 200 behind a wind-aided time of 24.90.

Nautus Moore had the highest finish for the Hornet men during the day as he placed fourth in the 400. Moore ran 47.18 which moved him into sixth place in school history and trimmed nearly a half-second off his previous best of 47.67. Moore's time is the second fastest by a Sacramento State athlete since 1999. Khalil Fowlkes also scored in the 400 by finishing in seventh place in 48.44.

Zachary Winger scored for the team in the 110- and 400-hurdles as well as the 4x100 relay. Winger was fifth in the 110-hurdles in 14.39 (wind 4.0). He also set a PR in the 400H in 54.36 taking over a second off his low of 55.89. Winger ran the leadoff leg of the 4x100 which finished seventh in a season-best time of 41.47.

DeVonn Johnson added a sixth-place finish in the 100 after running 11.94 (wind 3.5). Johnson was supposed be joined in the final by Blaize Holland who ran 10.21 in the qualifying round on Friday. However, Holland was forced to withdraw due to an injury.

The Hornet women added two all-conference honorees in the field events. Breanna Espinoza finished third in the discus and also jumped into fourth place in school history. Espinoza had a best of 163-00 which shattered her previous best of 148-05.

Jayla Flowers, who was the Big Sky indoor champion in the triple jump, finished third on Saturday. Flowers led a trio of Hornets in the top eight with a best of 41-00.50. Alexia Croffet was fourth at 40-06.00 while Audrey McElmurry was eighth at 38-11.00. All three marks were aided by winds over 2.0 mps.

John Gibbs and Joshua Braun finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the men's triple jump. Gibbs had a best of 49-02.25 (wind 4.3) while Braun posted a distance of 45-03.00 (wind 3.8).

Select Hornets will next compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships West First Round which will be held at Sacramento State on May 24-27. Each event will have 48 entries with the top 12 advancing to the outdoor championships. After this weekend, Holland ranks 29th in the 100 and Fitzgerald is 41st in the region in the 100-hurdles giving both a good shot of earning a spot in the field. John Maka is 53rd in the discus and Alyssa Brewer 55th in the 800 forcing the pair to wait for the entries to be finalized.
