GRESHAM, Ore. — Merle Weber earned all-Big Sky honors after placing third in the heptathlon and a trio of Hornet men scored points in the decathlon during the second day of the Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mt. Hood Community College on Thursday.
Â
Weber followed her second-place showing in the pentathlon during the indoor season with a third-place finish in the heptathlon. The freshman totaled 4,875 points which only trailed Idaho's Hanna Tait (5,206) and Idaho State's Josie Settle (5,001). Weber opened the second day of competition with a long jump of 17-04.75 before making her move up the leaderboard with a personal-best javelin thrown of 126-00. That mark was the best of the day and helped her pick up over 80 points on her top challengers. She closed the meet by running the 800 in 2:30.77.
Â
The Hornets endured highs and lows during the decathlon. Following the last event on Wednesday,
Blake Gross was disqualified from the 400 leaving the junior with zero points in the event and erasing a would-be PR of 48.44 seconds. Despite the setback,
Blake Gross continued the competition on Thursday and managed to place eighth overall with 5,533 points to score a point. His day included a discus throw of 108-01 to set a personal best.
Â
Brock Gross had the highest finish on the team after scoring 6,134 points to take fifth place. He ran 14.94 in the 110-hurdles and then also set a PR in the discus at 114-00. His title hopes were derailed by a no height in the pole vault but he followed with a javelin throw of 143-05 and ran the 1500 in 4:41.89 to score four team points.
Â
Cole Oliver set personal bests in four of the five events on Thursday and finished in seventh place with 6,045 points. Oliver threw the discus 112-11, cleared 10-00.00 in the pole vault, had a javelin throw of 127-07 and ran the 1500 in 5:03.47. His total was 1,101 points better than his previous best.
Â
The decathlon was won by Idaho State's Tom Stoelken who scored 7,202 points while Tyler Warnick of Weber State was second with 7,161.
Â
