TRACK & FIELD PUTS ITSELF IN POSITION FOR FINAL DAY OF BIG SKY OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Maka, Grant earn all-Big Sky honors and 12 advance to event finals

GREELEY, Calif. — Sacramento State student-athletes scored points in five events and advanced 12 others to event finals during day three of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships on Friday at Northern Colorado.

On a cool and cloudy day, the Hornet men totaled 15.5 points and are in sixth place while the women scored 16 points and are eighth. Northern Arizona tops the men's standings with 68.5 points and are followed by Weber State (56) and Montana State (49). The Weber State women have scored 49 points and are trailed by NAU (37) and MSU (29) heading into the final day.

Miles Grant started the day for the men by tying for third place in the high jump to earn all-Big Sky honors. Grant passed on the first bar and then cleared 1.97 and 2.02 meters on his first attempt at each height. He failed to clear 2.05m leaving him with a best of 6-07.50 which was good for 5.5 points towards the team total.

The men later added two points from Mason Mitchell in the long jump. Mitchell's best attempt of 24-03.75 came on his fifth attempt. The distance is the longest of his career but will not count as an official mark in the school records as the wind was at 3.7 meters per second — well above the legal reading of 2.0 mps. Any mark uder 4.0 mps can be counted toward NCAA qualification.

John Maka completed the scoring for the men on Friday by placing second in the discus. Maka uncorked a throw of 179-00 (54.56m) on his third attempt to move into fourth place in school history. The throw was 11-feet, 7-inches beyond his previous best and was the longest by a Hornet since 2018.

Breanna Espinoza finished sixth in the women's shot put with a career best of 44-02.00. Espinoza exceeded her previous best of 42-09.00 and had the longest put by a Hornet this year.

The women also received five points from Kelsee Aczon who finished fourth in the long jump. Aczon's best jump of 18-11.75 came on her fifth attempt. The distance was 7.5 inches beyond her career best but was aided by a wind of 2.6 mps.

The Hornet men advanced five athletes to finals on Saturday. In the 110-hurdles, Zachary Winger ran a wind-aided 14.57 to claim the final berth into the finals. Winger returned to the track later in the day to also take final spot to the finals in the 400-hurdles in 57.60.

Nautus Moore and Khalil Fowlkes each moved on in the 400. Moore ran 48.28 and will be seeded sixth while Fowkles crossed in 48.34 and was one spot back.

Blaize Holland claimed the top qualifying mark in the 100 in a wind-aided 10.21. Had the wind been legal, Holland's time would have beaten the school record of 10.25 which has stood for over 30 years. Holland will be joined in the finals by DeVonn Johnson who ran a wind-aided 10.49.

The women pushed three Hornets to the finals in the 100-hurdles. The trio were led by freshman Ava Fitzgerald with a time of 13.76 which was the third-fastest of the day. Kameryn Brown had a time of 14.06 and Tia Outlaw ran 14.39 to complete the group. All three times were wind-aided.

Daysha Ford advanced in the 200 and 400. Ford's time of 55.67 in the 400 was the fourth best in the field. A few hours later, she ran 24.18 to finish third in her heat and record the sixth-fastest time during the day.

Alyssa Brewer and Mia Lawrence will be part of the eight-athlete final of the women's 800. Brewer won her heat by nearly three seconds and will be seeded second in the finals with a time of 2:11.09. Lawrence claimed the final spot in the final after running 2:15.23.
