MORFEY'S TWO HOMERS POWER SOFTBALL TO DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP AT MONTANA, HORNETS 5-0 IN LEAGUE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SACRAMENTO -- Carley Morfey had home runs in both games, including a solo shot in the eighth inning of Game 1, as Sacramento State swept a road doubleheader at Montana on Friday afternoon. The Hornets won the first game, 2-1, in eight innings before taking the nightcap by a 5-4 score.

Morfey finished the day 3-for-6 with two runs, a double, two home runs, 10 total bases and five RBIs. Her home run in the nightcap was a two-run shot that gave Sacramento State a 2-1 lead in the second inning. Morfey's outburst was part of a day that saw Sacramento State erase deficits in both games to win.

The Hornets have now won five straight, and improved to 11-15 overall and 5-0 in the Big Sky Conference. Montana, which had been 3-0 in league play prior to today, dropped 9-20 overall and 3-2 in the Big Sky. The two teams will play the finale of their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at noon PT. Sacramento State, which won its first road games of the season today, improved to 17-4 all-time against Montana, including a current nine-game winning streak against the Griz that dates back to 2018.

Not only have the Hornets won five straight, each of the last four wins have come by one run as Sacramento State continues to get clutch performances. Pitcher Marissa Bertuccio was part of that clutch effort as the sophomore right-hander was dominant in Game 1, pitching all eight innings to improve to 3-0 in conference play.

Morfey was one of five Hornets with multiple hits today, including Alondra Mejia (3), Amber Rodriguez (2), Lewa Day (2) and Alexis Parish (2).

GAME 1

• Bertuccio (8-7) won her third straight start against a conference opponent, limiting Montana to just six hits and one run in eight innings. She walked none and struck out three while throwing just 86 pitches. That included working out of a runners at second and third with no out situation in the second inning. Bertuccio's only blemish was a solo home run in the fourth inning off the bat of Brooklyn Weisgram. In three games this season against a Big Sky opponent, Bertuccio is now 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA. That includes a pair of wins last week against Northern Colorado.

• Morfey drove in both Sacramento State runs, including a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning scoring Day, and the clutch solo home run in the eighth inning. The game-winning blast came on an 0-1 pitch and cleared the left field wall by a substantial margin.

• Sacramento State had just five hits off Montana starter Tristin Achenback as the Grizzly hurler allowed two runs with four walks and 11 strikeouts in eight innings. Besides the sixth and eighth innings, Sacramento State had runners at second and third with one out in the fourth, and a leadoff double in the seventh, but could not score more against Achenback (6-9).

• Of the Hornets' hits, two came from Rodriguez who had the leadoff double in the seventh. Parish, Mejia and Morfey had the other hits.

GAME 2

• Both teams scored in three different innings as Montana got the jump with a run in the first. After the Hornets scored twice in both the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead, the Grizzlies responded with two in the fourth to cut their deficit to 4-3. Sacramento State scored what turned out to be a very important run in the fifth inning on a Rylee Gresham two-out, RBI-single and Montana scored once in the bottom half to conclude the scoring.

• True freshman Kelsey Alcantara shook off a line drive that struck her non-throwing arm in the first inning, to work four innings while allowing eight hits and three runs. She improved to 2-1 with the win. Junior Alyssa Nunez registered her first save of the season, throwing the final three innings while allowing just two hits and one run. Nunez faced just 10 batters over three innings, and retired the side in order in a stress-free seventh inning while the Hornets were nursing the one-run lead.

• Morfey's two-run blast that sailed over the center field fence in the second inning gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Sacramento State scored twice more in the third on a Mejia sacrifice fly and Morfey RBI-double. The Morfey double came with two outs and scored Day. Sacramento State's final run, which proved to be its biggest, came on a two-out, RBI-single from Gresham that scored Parish. Morfey had both the Hornet extra base hits in the game - a double and homer

• Morfey now has a five-game hitting streak while Parish improved her hitting streak to four games.

• Both teams had 10 hits in the game. For the Hornets, Morfey, Day and Mejia all had two hits, while Haley Hanson, Parish, Gresham and Kennedy Echols also had hits. Hanson stole another base, and now has seven steals this season, and 18 in 50 career games.

• With Morfey's two homers today, a Sacramento State player has homered in all five conference games thus far. That included Lewa Day homering in all three games of last week's sweep of Northern Colorado.
