SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State dropped a pair of beach volleyball matches on Saturday, falling to both Pacific (3-2) and Santa Clara (5-0). Today marked the debut of Hornet Beach, the brand new 26,000 square foot on-campus beach facility at Sacramento State.
The Hornets fell to 0-3 on the young season while Pacific improved to 3-5 and Santa Clara 5-2.
Sacramento State will be playing without three players that would be in their beach lineup, as freshmen Bridgette Smith and Caitlin Volkmann are redshirting, and Cianna Andrews is resting an injury she recently came back from during the indoor season.
In the 3-2 loss to Pacific, the Hornet tandems of Ashtin Olin/Macey Hayden (No. 1) and Paige Swinney/Kalani Hayes (No. 2) were both victorious. Sacramento State's Michelle Taynton/Claudia Wilson (No. 4) and Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin/Paige Calvin (No. 5) both lost in three sets in another close matchup with Pacific.
The Hornets just lost to Pacific on April 11 in Stockton by a 4-1 score. The Hornets dropped two of those matches in three sets as well.
In the afternoon matchup, Santa Clara, which went 2-0 today, defeated the Hornets in straight sets in all five matches. The Broncos also beat San Jose State, 4-1, in a morning matchup.
The Hornets and San Jose State will play tomorrow morning at Hornet Beach at 10 a.m.
