2-HIT SHUTOUT FOR BERTUCCIO, SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH PACIFIC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning to win the first game behind sophomore Marissa Bertuccio's second consecutive shutout and split a doubleheader with Pacific on Sunday at Shea Stadium. The Hornets won the first game, 1-0, before dropping the second to the Tigers, 8-1.

Today marked the final games of the Capital Classic, as the Hornets went 3-3 at their home tournament, splitting doubleheaders with UC Davis on Thursday and Santa Clara on Friday. The Hornets have now played five home doubleheaders this season, splitting all five.

The two teams were scoreless through the first six-and-a-half innings of the opening game before Sacramento State plated the game's only run in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Charizma Guzman grounded a ball to third and the throw to the plate was high allowing Lewa Day to score the winning run.

The run marked Sacramento State's first walk-off win of the year and spoiled a magnificent pitching performance by both starters. Bertuccio earned the victory for the Hornets and improved to 5-5 on the season with four shutouts and a 2.26 ERA. She went the distance and allowed just two hits and walked none with one strikeout. Bethany Hammer suffered the defeat despite going 6-plus innings and scattering two hits with two walks with three strikeouts.

Hammer faced the minimum through 5.2 innings as she allowed just one walk which was erased by a double play. Sacramento State started the seventh with a leadoff walk from Day who then stole second base. Following a pitching change, Alondra Mejia singled up the middle to place runners on the corners with no outs. After a strikeout, Samantha Parrish laid down a safety squeeze attempt which resulted in her reaching base safely to load the bases for Guzman.

Pacific's best chance to score came in the third inning when back-to-back errors by Sacramento State gave the Tigers runners on second and third with one out. Carly Lucchetti then lined a ball to right field which was caught by a leaping Haley Hanson. The play likely should have scored the runner from the third, but she had to return to the bag to tag up and could not advance. Bertuccio then wiggled her way out of the jam with a fly ball to left field.

The Tigers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second game as they scored three runs in the first inning. Myka Sutherlin opened the game with a triple down the right field line and was driven in on a single from Lucchetti. A single from Maddison Kahwaty placed runners on the corners with two outs only to have Pacific score two more runs on a throwing error. Marissa Fabian hit a slow ground ball up the first base line and the throw was high allowing all runners to advance two additional bases.

Sacramento State's first run came in the bottom of the fourth inning with the help of a leadoff double from Day down the left field line. She advanced to third on a single from Mejia and scored on a throwing error.

The Tigers matched the run and added two more in the top of the fifth, and plated another pair of runs in the seventh.

Vanessa Strong earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the year. Strong lasted five innings and did not surrender an earned run which kept her ERA at 0.00 for the year. She allowed four hits in the game with four strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Alyssa Nunez (1-2) took the loss after pitching the first 4.1 innings. Carley Morfey (2.0 ip) and Kelsey Alcantara (0.2 ip) also pitched.

The Hornets had five players earn hits in the game, with Day leading the way after going 2-for-3.

Day, Mejia, Kennedy Echols and the Parish sisters (Alexis and Samantha) all combined for two hits over both games of the doubleheader. Those five players accounted for all 10 of the Hornets' hits during the day.

Sacramento State will next travel to Oregon for five games over three days. The Hornets begin the trip with a doubleheader at Oregon State on Friday before playing in a tournament at Oregon which sees the team take on Nevada and Oregon on Saturday, and Nevada on Sunday.
