SAN JOSE -- San Jose State secured doubles wins at all five spots of the lineup to defeat Sacramento State, 5-0, on Thursday afternoon at Spartan Beach.
The match marked the season opener for the Hornets (0-1) while San Jose State improved to 5-1. All six of the Spartans' matches have come at home.
The Hornets, who will play three times this week, kept things close in four of the five doubles matches.
At No. 5, the duo of Sarah Falk and Michelle Taynton lost in three sets, 14-21, 21-14, 15-9. In addition, Paige Swinney/Claudia Wilson fell at No. 3 (21-12, 22-20), Macey Hayden/McKenna Smith at No. 2 (21-17, 24-22) and Sarah Davis/Ashtin Olin at No. 1 (21-18, 21-13).
Sophomores Paige Calvin and Kayla Subbert lost at No. 4 by a 21-12, 21-10 score.
Sacramento State, entering its eighth year as a beach volleyball program, will play twice more on Saturday in Stockton. The Hornets open the day against Pacific at 10 a.m., followed by another match against San Jose State at noon.
