SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's and women's track and field teams defended their titles in the annual Causeway Classic dual meet on Friday night at Hornet Stadium. The Hornet women won 114-84 while the men posted a 104-83 victory. The meet was the final regular season contest for Sacramento State as the team will next compete at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in Bozeman, Mont., in two weeks.
Overall, Sacramento State student-athletes recorded six school top 10 marks and set 35 personal bests in the meet against UC Davis.
MEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS
- Miles Grant became just the second Hornet since 2000 to clear seven feet in the high jump as he had a successful attempt 7-00.25 to move into a tie for seventh place in school history. Grant joins Emilio Hernandez (7-01.00, 2011) as the only Sacramento State athletes to clear the mark this century. He extended his Big Sky lead with the performance and is now tied for 11th in NCAA Div. I.
- John Gibbs ended the night with a triple jump of 50-04.50 to win the event and blow past 50 feet for the first time in his career. Gibbs' previous best was 49-05.75 set last week, his performance today moved him to fifth in school history and to the top of the Big Sky list this season. Gibbs also set a PR of 15-05.75 in the pole vault where he finished in second place.
- Mason Mitchell won the long jump with a best of 23-04.75.
- Jack Charlton claimed the top mark in the javelin with a best of 183-04. Charlton also set his PR in the long jump at 22-00.25 to finish third.
- John Maka finished first in the discus with a season-best effort of 172-03 which was 10 feet further than the closest competitor.
- Diego Lopez and Malik Shakur were first and second in the hammer. Lopez won the event with a toss of 185-04 while Shakur used a PR of 178-06.
WOMEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS
- Izzi Leonard and Chandler Miller each cleared 5-05.75 in the high jump. Leonard was awarded first place by virtue of fewer attempts. The height set a PR for Miller.
- Tamia Ramos moved into sixth place in school history and won the long jump at 19-11.00. Ramos' previously ranked 10th in the Hornet record book with a mark of 19-03.50 set on Mar. 23. R'kai Davis (18-11.25) and Alexia Croffet (18-08.50) also set PRs in the event while placing third and fourth, respectively.
- Croffet won the triple jump with a wind-aided leap of 40-01.25. Davis was third and set a career best at 39-07.25 with an allowable wind reading.
- Hope Gordon captured the top spot in the shot put behind a career best put of 45-02.25 for a 24-inch improvement. Abby Meder added a season best mark of 44-04.00 to finish second.
- Breanna Espinoza and Meder were 1-2 in the discus. Espinoza won the event at 151-00 while Meder set her season best of 139-04.
- Jey Rehnvall and Deanna Gaines (142-08) each set PRs in the hammer. Rehnvall placed third overall with a best of 160-07 which was seven feet beyond her previous best.
- Abby Sheets took the top spot in the javelin behind a throw of 126-11.
Men's Track Highlights
- Xavier Bruce led the team by placing second in the 100 and 200. Bruce had a time of 10.76 in the 100 to finish .02 seconds ahead of Jalen Adams. He ran a wind-aided 21.70 in the 200.
- Malachi Cox recorded the fastest 400 of his career in 47.86. Nautus Moore was third behind a season best 47.86 while Nathan Rider (49.03) and Jonathan Yates (51.55) each recorded PRs.
- Sacramento State had four of the top five finishers in the 800 with all four posting the fastest times of their careers. Brandon Moreno won the event in 1:50.55 to move into sixth place in school history. His time is the fastest by a Hornet since Nathanael Litwiller set the school record of 1:48.35 at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Other Hornets to set career bests in the race were Jake Slade (1:52.78), Jacob Polivka (1:53.87) and Irven Hill (1:54.20).
- Aiden Maddison had the best finish in the 1500 in 4:00.03 to set his fastest time of the year.
- Zachary Winger swept the 110- and 400-hurdles titles. Winger ran 14.48 to win the 110H with teammate Jack Charlton setting a season best of 15.06 to place second. Winger recorded the fastest 400H time of his career in 54.07 while Joshua Braun also set a PR of 1:00.06.
- The men's 4x400 relay team recorded its fastest time of the season in 40.99 to win the event.
Women's Track Highlights
- Freshman Breija Stredic finished in first place in the 100 and 400-hurdles. Stredic ran 11.81 in the 100 to move into a tie for 10th place in school history in the event. She is the first Hornet to crack the top 10 in the women's 100 since 2021 and took .14 seconds off her only other time in the event this season. The Hornets took the top five positions in the 100 with Jessi Barry setting a career best in 12.06 to finish second.
- Stredic returned an hour later to cruise to a victory in the 400-hurdles in 1:03.80. Stredic was never challenged in the race and was to pull off down the final stretch.
- Kassidy Schroth and Zoe Ewell finished 1-2 in the 200. Schroth fnished in 25.38 while Ewell was close behind in 25.44
- Emily Giddens was the only Hornet in the 400 but won the event in a career best 56.59. That time was over a half-second faster than her previous best during her freshman season.
- Sacramento State accounted for the top four finishers in the 100 and nine of the top 10. Mia Lawrence led the group in 2:13.56 to win. Ashley Busienei set a PR with a time of 2:15.50 to place fourth.
- Four Hornets set personal bests in the 1500 led by Busienei who placed second overall in 4:26.60. Sophia Dudley ran 4:36.19 to finish third and Viviana Valenton was fourth in 4:26.60. Kate Sanders completed the quartet with a PR of 4:44.24.
- Ava Fitzgerald, Kameryn Brown and Eliana Coburn captured the top three spots in the 100-hurdles. Fitzgerald ran a season best 13.69 seconds which is the fourth-fastest in the Big Sky Conference this season.
- Tia Oliver started the night on the track for the team and improved her third-place standing in school history in the steeplechase. Oliver ran 10:46.73 which was nearly a three-second improvement over her time from last season.
