SAN JOSE, Calif. -- On a rare occasion where all five beach doubles matches lasted three sets, Utah outlasted Sacramento State, 4-1, on the second and final day of the San Jose Invitational.
In a match that could have gone either way, Utah won the first set in all five doubles matchups, only to see Sacramento State battle back to take the second set.
The Hornets' win came from
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin/
Abbey Kadillak at No. 5 by a 21-17, 20-22, 15-10 score. The pair, who begin playing with each other for the first time this weekend, went 2-1 at the tournament.
Utah narrowly edged Sacramento State at Nos. 1-4 doubles:
Greta Davis/
Caitlin Volkmann fell at No. 1 (25-23, 18-21, 15-13),
Kalani Hayes/
Ellie Tisko at No. 2 (21-17, 16-21, 15-9),
Karlee Soderberg/
Mia Guevara at No. 3 (21-13, 21-23, 15-11), and
Ashlynn Archer/
Hailey Plugge at No. 4 (21-19, 17-21, 15-8).
After playing its first 13 matches of the season away from home, Sacramento State (5-8) will finally play at Hornet Beach next week. The Hornets co-host the
Big West Challenge (with UC Davis), and Sacramento State will play six times at home Friday-Sunday. The event brings together all seven teams in the Big West Conference for a round robin tournament.
Sacramento State will play twice on Friday, once on Saturday, and three times on Sunday. On Friday, the Hornets play CSU Bakersfield at 10 a.m., followed by Long Beach State at 3 p.m.
