BEACH VOLLEYBALL GOES 2-0 AT AGGIE CLASSIC; BEATS UC DAVIS AND SANTA CLARA

DAVIS, Calif. -- Sacramento State received wins from its Nos. 1, 2 and 3 doubles teams in both matches today to help the Hornets to victories over Santa Clara (3-2) and UC Davis (4-1) at the UCD Beach Volleyball Complex.

Just one day after losing to both teams to begin the Aggie Classic on Friday, Sacramento State (14-15) stormed back to defeat both teams. In the process, the Hornets were able to put an end to a pair of losing streaks against both teams.

The Hornets had lost 12 straight to Santa Clara, and hadn't beaten the Broncos since 2017. Sacramento State also defeated UC Davis for the first time in program history, snapping an 0-17 skid.

At 14-15, Sacramento State has its most wins in program history (2013-pres.), and today's victories were a nice springboard into next week's Big West Conference Championship in San Luis Obispo. Today's matches were the final of the regular season for the Hornets.

Perhaps the biggest win of the day, and most stressful, came at No. 1 against Santa Clara, With the team score tied at 2-2, Ashlynn Archer/Reese Ampi were locked in a third set grinder. The duo trailed the Broncos, 10-5, and later 13-11 in the third set. However, Ampi/Archer closed the set on a 5-1 run to win, 15-21, 23-21, 16-14 and seal the Hornet win.

Archer/Ampi at No. 1, Victoria Marthaler/Aurora Bibolotti at No. 2, and Kate Doorn/Mia Guevara at No. 3 each won both their matches today. That includes straight-set wins in each contest for Marthaler/Bibolotti and Doorn/Guevara.

The Hornets also received a straight-set win from Karlie Spohn/Abbey Kadillak at No. 5 against the Aggies.

Doorn/Guevara, who set the program single-season record for wins yesterday, put two more wins on their ledger today. The pair is now 19-10 this season, and has won seven of their last eight matches.

The Big West Championship will take place Thursday-Friday at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex in San Luis Obispo. All seven Big West teams will compete for the title at the double-elimination event. Matchups will be coming out soon.
