DAVIS, Calif. -- Sacramento State dropped a pair of matches on the first day of the Aggie Classic, falling to both host UC Davis (5-0) and Santa Clara (4-1).

The headline of the day for the Hornets, however, was the play of No. 3 pair Kate Doorn and Mia Guevara. The duo won their match vs. Santa Clara in three sets, and set the new program single-season record with 17 wins. The duo is now 17-10 this season, and has won five of their last six matches. 

The previous record of 16 wins was set last season by Ashlynn Archer/Ellie Tisko.

Today's outcomes were much closer than the final scores indicated. In the loss to UC Davis, three doubles matches went to three sets with the Hornets dropping each. That included Greta Davis/Skyler Gartin falling, 18-16, in the third, Victoria Marthaler/Aurora Bibolotti falling, 15-12, in the third, and Reese Ampi/Archer nearly winning in straight sets before falling, 13-21, 24-22, 15-10.

If that wasn't enough, Karlie Spohn/Abbey Kadillak lost, 28-26, in their second set.

In the matchup against Santa Clara, Marthaler/Bibolotti fell again in three sets, this time by a 19-17 score. Doorn/Guevara posted the Hornets' lone win at No. 3 with an 18-21, 21-11, 15-13 victory.

Sacramento State (12-15) is back in action tomorrow for two more matches in Davis. That includes a 12 p.m. matchup with Santa Clara and 2 p.m. at UC Davis.
