SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Led by the No. 1 doubles team of

Kalani Hayes, Sacramento State went 2-1 in tripleheader beach action on a rainy Saturday in Santa Cruz.
The Hornets opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Santa Clara, but bounced back to defeat both Pacific (4-1) and San Francisco (3-2). The Hornets played matches at 9 a.m., noon, and 3:30 p.m., and used the same lineups in all three matchups.
That included Hayes/Smith, who remain undefeated this season at the No. 1 spot (4-0). Today, the duo won in three sets against Santa Clara, and was victorious in straight sets against both Pacific and San Francisco.
The No. 2 tandem of
Greta Davis/
Caitlin Volkmann went 2-1, which included wins over Santa Clara and Pacific. The duo was four points away from being 3-0, but lost in extremely close fashion to USF by a 26-24, 21-19 score.
Sacramento State's No. 5 team of
Caty Cordano/
Hailey Plugge also went 2-1, beating opponents from Pacific and San Francisco. The pair crushed their Pacific opponent by a 21-7, 21-7 score.
The No. 3 team of
Ashlynn Archer/
Ellie Tisko had a win vs. San Francisco, and the No. 4 team of
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin/
Carrie Crom beat a tandem from Pacific.
In addition,

Mia Guevara won their exhibition match at No. 6 over a team from Santa Clara by a 21-8, 22-20 score.
Sacramento State improved to 2-2 on the young season. Three of the team's four matches have resulted in 3-2 outcomes. That includes a 3-2 road loss at UC Davis in the season opener on Wednesday.
The Hornets return to the sand for their home opener against Pacific next Saturday at 11 a.m.
