MOSCOW, Idaho — Jayla Flowers finished first in the triple jump and
Ava Fitzgerald and
Alyssa Brewer added all-Big Sky honors in their events to help the Sacramento State women finish fourth at the Big Sky Indoor Championships on Saturday. The Hornet men finished in ninth place.
Flowers continued Sacramento State's success in the indoor triple jump as a Hornet has finished first nine times since 2004. The sophomore's best attempt of 39-06.00 came on her fifth jump and earned her the title by a quarter of an inch. The effort was a significant improved for Flowers, blowing past her previous pest of 36-09.50.
Alexia Croffet also scored for the team in the event, placing fourth at 39-01.00 while
Audrey McElmurry was ninth with a PR of 37-03.25.
Ava Fitzgerald finished in second place in the 60-hurdles in a time of 8.50. That mark improved the freshman's fifth-place standing in school history and earned her all-conference honors as a result of placing in the top three. Fellow freshman
Tia Outlaw was seventh during the day in 8.76 seconds to score two points for the team.
Brewer ran 2:10.45 to finish in third place at her first Big Sky Indoor Championship. The senior edged Montana State's Madison Smith by .04 seconds to finish on the podium. The race was won by Maggi Congdon of Northern Arizona who scored 2:05.71 to set the conference record.
Daysha Ford contributed toward the team total with a seventh-place finish in the 400. Ford ran 57.25 during the finals a day after running 55.85 to move into seventh place in school history. Ford also ran the leadoff leg of the 4x400 relay with
Sarah Collier,
Asiah Fields and Brewer. The team placed sixth in 3:48.43.
While not scoring,
Molly Latincsics jumped into eighth place all-time at Sacramento State in the women's 3K after running 10:01.08. That time was over a 10 second improvement from her previous best of 10:11.30.
Izzi Leonard moved into seventh place in program history after clearing 5-07.00 in the women's high jump. That mark placed Leonard in fourth place at the meet and was just one inch behind second place.
The final scorer for the women was
Abby Meder who placed sixth in the shot put. Meder had a season beset of 45-04.25.
Breanna Espinoza (40-02.25) and
Meleeah Holmes McKown (40-00.75), set season and career bests, respectively.
The Hornet men had two scorers in the triple jump.
John Gibbs was sixth with a best of 47-04.50 on his second try.
Joshua Braun slid into eighth place to earn point with a leap of 45-10.50 on his final attempt. Gibbs also set a PR in the pole vault at 15-05.00. That bar was 4.75 inches above his previous best.
Northern Arizona won both team championships. The Lumberjack women were followed by Montana State and Idaho in the top three. In the men's standings, Idaho and Montana State were second and third.
Sacramento State will now turn its attentions to the outdoor season where the team will begin the year at the Aggie Open on Mar. 10-11. The Hornets will host two meets during the regular season as well as the NCAA West Preliminary. The first home meet will be the Sacramento State Open on Saturday, Apr. 8.
