Box Score 2 SACRAMENTO -- In a highly anticipated three-game series between two of the top teams in the Big Sky Conference, Weber State got the jump on Sacramento State, sweeping a doubleheader over the Hornets today at Shea Stadium. The Wildcats won the first game, 5-4, before taking the nightcap, 10-9, in 10 innings.
That second game saw the Hornets score six times in the seventh inning to erase a 9-3 deficit, but couldn't quite get over the hump in extra innings. Game 2 lasted three hours and 48 minutes, and the two teams combined for 19 runs, 30 hits, 24 runners left on base and seven errors.
Sacramento State (12-17, 6-2) saw its six-game winning streak come to an end, and had won its last five one-run decisions before today. Weber State (15-12, 5-0) remains unbeaten in the Big Sky and has won six of its last seven games. The Wildcats were selected to finish first in the Big Sky preseason coaches poll while the Hornets were picked second. These same two teams will play the series finale tomorrow at noon at Shea Stadium.
Rylee Gresham combined for five hits in today's doubleheader while Alexis Parish had four, and Carley Morfey, Amber Rodriguez and Alondra Mejia each had three hits. The Hornets hit three home runs in the second game, including the first career collegiate round tripper for Aliyah Robles. Lewa Day hit her team-high ninth homer and Alondra Mejia collected her fourth home run in the last three games.
GAME 1
• Both teams were scoreless the first three innings before a combined nine runs were scored between the fourth and sixth innings. The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead in the fourth before the Hornets scored once in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. However, Weber State scored twice in the sixth, and held on for the 5-4 victory.
• One of the biggest moments of the game occurred in the fourth inning when Weber State scored twice with two outs on a routine infield popup that was lost in the sun. Those two runs loomed large in the one-run loss. Starter Marissa Bertuccio was the victim of that ball lost in the sun, and finished the game throwing seven innings while allowing 10 hits and five runs with no walks and eight strikeouts.
• The Hornets' run in the fourth inning came on an RBI-double from Rodriguez, followed by three runs in the fifth via RBI-single from Morfey and two-run single from Rodriguez. Sacramento State had plenty of chances to score during the game, but stranded 12 runners on base, including eight runners in the final four innings.
• Weber State used a pair of pitchers but it was Kate Donaldson (5-4) that got the win in relief, allowing six hits and three unearned runs over 3.2 innings. The Wildcat defense committed five errors as three of Sacramento State's four runs were unearned. Nine different Weber State players had hits while six Hornets had hits.
• Three Sacramento State players had multiple hit games, including Morfey, Gresham and Rodriguez who all finished with two knocks.
GAME 2
• In one of the wildest games at Shea Stadium in recent memory, the Wildcats outlasted Sacramento State, 10-9, in 10 innings. Weber State had 10 runs, 14 hits, four errors and stranded 10 runners on base. The Hornets had nine runs, 16 hits, three errors, and left 14 runners on base. In fact, Sacramento State stranded a combined 26 runners on base in today's doubleheader.
• Sacramento State used 21 players in the game, including 18 position players and three pitchers. The only three Hornets to play the entire game without being substituted once were Parish, Day and Gresham. The game time of three hours and 48 minutes was easily the longest of the season, and the 10 innings are also a season high.
• Things looked bleak after Weber State scored four times in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-3 lead. However, Sacramento State sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the seventh, compiling six runs and seven hits. Day's three-run homer kicked off the scoring before Katelyn Snow had a pinch hit RBI-single, Robles was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Parish had a two-out RBI-single to tie the game. The Hornets had the bases loaded with the game tied and Day at the plate, but she hit a deep fly ball to center field that was caught.
• Sacramento State stranded at least two runners on base in the second, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings. The Hornets did have a season-high tying nine runs and season-best 16 hits, but had many more opportunities to score.
• The Hornets used Kelsey Alcantara, Alyssa Nunez and Bertuccio in the circle. Bertuccio got the loss, allowing just two hits and one run in 2.1 innings. Unfortunately, that one run came in the top of the 10th, an RBI-single from Chloe Camarero scoring Mia Rushton.
• Sacramento State got a runner to second base with one out in the bottom half of the 10th, but Rodriguez lined into a double play to end the game. Rodriguez crushed a line drive that Weber State third baseman Emily Ruhl speared and quickly threw to second to double off the Hornet runner.
• Gresham and Parish had three hits, and Mejia had two knocks. Eleven different Hornets had hits, and the team used three pinch hitters and five pinch runners.
• Weber State also used three pitchers as Amanda Sink (2-2) got the win. Sink started, and finished the game, sandwiching those two appearances around Donaldson and Mariah Ramirez.
