In the nightcap, Bertuccio and Santa Clara starter Regan Dias were locked in a scoreless tie through five innings before the Hornets finally broke through for three runs in the sixth inning. In fact, both pitchers were so locked in, they combined to throw just 160 pitches the entire way in a game that lasted a swift hour and 34 minutes.
In that sixth inning, with one out, the Hornets recorded four straight hits, including a single from Day followed by an RBI-triple from Mejia, an infield single from Samantha Parish, and a two-run double from Amber Rodriguez. Four of the Hornets' seven hits came that inning, and the three runs were more than enough support for Bertuccio who improved to 4-5 with the win. Dias (1-3) allowed three runs and seven hits without a strikeout in six innings. Day was the only player from either team to finish with multiple hits (2-for-3).
In the opener, Santa Clara led from start to finish, collecting single runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings, followed by three more in the seventh off three Sacramento State pitchers.
