Box Score SACRAMENTO -- In a game that featured 14 lead changes and 13 ties, you figured it would come down to a last second shot. And that's exactly what happened as Weber State's Isiah Brown converted a layup with 1.5 seconds remaining to break a tie and give Weber State a 72-70 win over Sacramento State on Senior Day at the Nest.
Neither team led by more than eight points the entire contest, and no one led by more than three points the final 15 minutes. In a back and forth entertaining game, the outcome likely came down to free throws. While both teams shot well from the field (Hornets 49%, Wildcats 52%), Sacramento State struggled from the free throw line, converting on just 11-of-21 attempts. That included three misses in the final 2:30, one of which was the front end of a 1-and-1 situation. Weber State, meanwhile, also converted 11 free throws, but on 17 attempts.
Sacramento State took its final lead of the game at 66-64 when Brandon Davis converted a running floater with 3:33 left. Weber State would score four straight points on a Dontay Bassett dunk and jumper from Dillon Jones to take a 68-66 lead at the 1:53 mark. A pair of Ethan Esposito free throws tied the game, but another Jones bucket with 29 seconds left gave the Wildcats the lead again. A Christian Terrell jumper tied the score at 70-70 with seven seconds left, and that set the stage for Brown. One of the best scorers in the conference, Brown, who entered the game averaging 18.0 ppg, drove hard to the basket and found a slight lane that he used to his advantage, converting a twisting layup with 1.5 seconds left.
The Hornets' baseball style pass from the opposite base line was stolen and the game ended.
Sacramento State, which was playing its final home game of the season, dropped to 7-10 overall and 4-8 in the Big Sky Conference. Prior the game, Hornet seniors Terrell, Esposito, Bryce Fowler, William FitzPatrick and Spencer Monteiro were honored with a five-minute tribute video. Esposito had a monster game, tying his career high in both points (26) and rebounds (13), registering his fifth double-double of the season, and finishing 9-for-15 from the field.
The Hornets fell for just the third time at home this season (5-3), but are still a combined 82-38 inside the Nest dating back to 2012.
Weber State, which sits in a tie for second place the Big Sky standings, has now won five straight and nine of its 10 nine games. The Wildcats improved to 16-5 overall, 11-3 in conference, and 6-4 on the road. Coupled with its 82-73 win on Thursday, Weber State swept the season series over Sacramento State for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
Esposito had a big second half with 17 points, but it was not enough as his 26 total points matched his career best that he accomplished on two previous occasions. Sacramento State was 27-for-55 (49%) from the field and 46% (5-11) from the 3-point line. Weber State finished at 52% from the field (including 55% in the second half) and 29% (5-17) from the 3-point line. Both teams had 30 rebounds and 10 turnovers. The Wildcats outscored the Hornets by identical 36-35 scores in both halves.
Joining Esposito in double figures were fellow seniors Fowler (10 points, 5 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks) and Terrell (10 points, 5 rebounds). Davis registered eight points, four rebounds and two steals, David Jones had six points, three rebounds and a blocked shot, and both FitzPatrick and Zach Chappell finished with five points. Both teams used a rotation of eight players, as Samaad Hector (6 minutes) also received playing time for Sacramento State.
Weber State was led by Zahir Porter's 20 points while Brown had 18 points and Jones 12 points.
