Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Senior Christian Terrell scored a career-high 26 points, and both Ethan Esposito (22 points, 13 rebounds) and Samaad Hector (12 points, 12 rebounds) notched double-doubles to help Sacramento State to an 85-54 home win over Fresno Pacific on Sunday afternoon.
The Hornets dominated throughout, shooting 52% from the field while holding commanding advantages over the Sunbirds in rebounding (44-20), second chance points (23-2), fast break points (14-4) and points off turnovers (21-8). Sacramento State had 17 offensive rebounds, 25 assists on its 34 made buckets, and 10 steals. The Hornets used a 19-5 run to pull away late in the first half, and led by double figures the final 26:51.
With the victory, Sacramento State, playing its final non-conference game of the season, improved to 4-1. The Hornets had gone over three weeks without playing a game until falling on the road at Saint Mary's on Wednesday night. Sacramento State is now 4-0 at home this season, and 81-35 (.696 winning percentage) inside the Nest dating back to 2012.
Fresno Pacific is a Div. II team that resides in the PacWest Conference, and had already kept things relatively close in losses to San Jose State (L, 87-79) and Fresno State (L, 78-65), The Hornets were playing the Sunbirds for the first time since the 1986-87 season when Sacramento State was a member of the Div. II ranks. The Hornets, who are now 25-4 all-time against Fresno Pacific, became a Div. I member in 1991.
Sacramento State entered the game as the nation's 12th best defense allowing just 58.0 points per game. That number will improve after another stout defensive effort by the Hornets, limiting a Fresno Pacific team that was averaging 72.0 points per contest against Div. I competition. The Sunbirds were limited to 43% shooting (33% in the second half), and 25% (4-16) from the 3-point line.
Sacramento State, which has been dealing with injuries all season, had just eight healthy bodies for today's game.
One of those healthy players was Terrell, who finished with 26 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals in 31 minutes. He finished 12-of-16 from the field , 2-for-3 from the 3-point line, and his scoring outburst included three dunks. In his first active season with the Hornets, the transfer from UC Santa Barbara had 20 points at halftime, and has now scored at least 15 points in four of the Hornets' five games.
Esposito posted his fifth career double-double with career highs in both points (22) and rebounds (13). He shot 10-for-18 from the field and was a game-high +31 in plus/minus. Hector, a transfer from Lower Columbia JC, had his first double-double in a Hornet uniform with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Five of those 12 boards came on the offensive glass.
Senior Bryce Fowler, who entered the game as the Hornets' leading scorer (14.5 ppg), was distributing the ball effectively all afternoon. Though he finished with two points, Fowler had a career-best 10 assists with just one turnover and two steals. Senior Spencer Monteiro had career bests in points (16) and rebounds (7) while connecting on 6-for-7 from the field, 1-of-1 from distance and 3-for-4 from the free throw line.
The other three Hornets to appear in today's game also contributed - Brandon Davis (3 pts, 2 reb, 7 ast, 4 stl), Deshaun Highler (2 pts, 2 ast) and Teiano Hardee (2 pts, 3 reb, 1 block).
Zero Fresno Pacific players scored more than 10 points.
The Hornets, who are already 2-0 in the Big Sky Conference after home wins against Idaho on Dec. 3/5, will jump back into conference play next week when they play a home and home series with Portland State. The Hornets will host the Vikings on Thursday at 3 p.m. before traveling to Portland on Saturday for a noon tip. The rare 3 p.m. start time on a weekday was to allow Portland State to get home that same evening.
