BEACH VOLLEYBALL DROPS A PAIR OF MATCHES ON SECOND DAY OF THE BIG WEST CHALLENGE

FOLSOM, Calif. — Sacramento State dropped a pair of matches on the second day of the Big West Conference Beach Volleyball Challenge on Saturday afternoon at Livermore Community Park. The Hornets opened the day with a 5-0 loss to third-ranked Hawai'i before falling, 4-1, to CSUN.

The three day event, which is being hosted by Sacramento State, began yesterday and will feature two more matches tomorrow. All six teams in the Big West are competing in a round robin tournament against each other. Each team will play the other five teams once during tourney play. The tournament features 15 matches, with six taking place yesterday, seven more today, and two tomorrow.

The two matches tomorrow feature Long Beach State taking on Cal Poly at 9 a.m., and Sacramento State facing Long Beach State at 11 a.m. Results and box scores from every match of the first two days of the Big West Challenge, as well as tomorrow's schedule, can be found at the tournament home page by clicking here.

Of the six teams at the event, three are ranked among the top six beach teams in the nation, including third-ranked Hawai'i, fifth-ranked Long Beach State and sixth-ranked Cal Poly.

After two days, Hawai'i is already the tournament champions as the Rainbow Wahine posted a perfect 5-0 record. Cal Poly is 3-1, and will play its final match tomorrow while Long Beach State is 2-1, and will play twice tomorrow. Both CSUN (2-3) and CSU Bakersfield (0-5) wrapped up tournament play today, and Sacramento State will bring a 1-3 record into tomorrow's matchup with Long Beach State. The Hornets got their lone win yesterday vs. CSU Bakersfield.

While Sacramento State lost in straight sets in each doubles matchup today vs. Hawai'i, the Hornets' 4-1 loss to CSUN was much closer than the final score indicated. The Hornets got their lone win from the No. 4 tandem of Macey Hayden and Skyler Takeda by a 21-17, 21-13 score.

Each of the other four doubles matchups were close as the Hornets' Mikaela Nocetti/Sarah Davis at No. 1 (17-21, 21-15, 15-10) and Brigitte Murdock/Paige Swinney at No. 5 (21-18, 15-20, 15-8) both lost in three sets. At No. 3, Hannah Meadows and Ashtin Olin fell by the slimmest of margins (22-20, 23-21) and Kennedy Kurtz/Lana Brown kept things close at No. 2 before falling, 21-19, 21-17.
