BOISE, Idadho – Trailing, 2-1, Sacramento State received wins from the doubles combinations of Madeline Cannon/Morgan Stanley and Lexie Skalbeck/Brie Gathright to defeat Boise State, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at the Boise State Sand Volleyball Complex.
The Hornets split their two matches in Boise today, losing to Oregon earlier in the day by a 3-2 score. The victory over Boise State avenged a 5-0 loss at home to the Broncos earlier this season.
Sacramento State moved its record to 4-7 while Boise State is now 3-2 and Oregon is 1-2.
The Boise State match started with Brigitte Murdock and Courtney Dietrich winning at No. 5 over Jensen Allen and Maddie Simon, 15-21, 22-20, 15-13. In that third set, Murdock/Dietrich closed on a 5-0 run after trailing, 13-10.
The Broncos would win matches at Nos. 3 and 4 to take a 2-1 lead. In two incredibly tight contests, Sacramento State would prevail in both. Stanley/Cannon tied the match at 2-2 after winning at No. 1 by a 22-20, 21-18 score.
At No. 2, all three sets were decided by two points as Skalbeck/Gathright outlasted Emily Sullivan and Janell Walley, 22-20, 19-21, 16-14. No team led by more than two points the entire third set. With the score tied at 14-14, a Gathright block followed by a Skalbeck kill ended the match.
Skalbeck and Gathright won both their matches today, including a 21-12, 24-22 victory at No. 2 against Oregon. The other win against the Ducks came at No. 4 where Lana Brown and Hannah Meadows were victorious by a 21-18, 21-13 score. However, Oregon won at at Nos. 1, 3 and 5 to pull out the victory. Stanley/Cannon (15-9 in the 3rd) and Dietrich/Murdock (15-5 in the 3rd) both lost in three-set affairs.
The Hornets return to action when they host a doubleheader on April 13 against Oregon (2:30 p.m.) and Washington (4:30 p.m.). Like all home matches, the doubleheader will be played at Livermore Community Park in Folsom, about a 25-minute drive from the Sacramento State campus.
