STANFORD, Calif. -- Sacramento State split a pair of matches on the final day of the team competition at the NorCal Sand Volleyball Invitational on Saturday. The Hornets opened the day by defeating San Francisco, 4-1, before losing to Cal later in the day by a 5-0 score.
With the split, the Hornets, who are playing their first matches of the season this week, moved their record to 1-2 this season. That included a loss to tournament host Stanford yesterday.
In Sacramento State's win against San Francisco, the Hornet tandems of Kayla Beal and Sloan Lovett at No. 1 (21-12, 12-21, 15-13), Lauren Aikels and Kennedy Kurtz at No. 3 (21-19, 21-16), Shannon Boyle and Lexie Skalbeck at No. 4 (18-21, 21-17, 15-12), and Courtney Dietrich and Brigitte Murdock at No. 5 (15-21, 21-14, 15-11) were all victorious.
In the loss to Cal, three of the Hornets' five doubles teams took their matches to three sets, but Sacramento State wasn't able to pull out a victory. Madeline Cannon and Morgan Stanley lost at No. 2 by a 21-17, 19-21, 15-13 score, Boyle and Skalbeck lost at No. 4 by a 10-21, 21-8, 15-12 score, and Dietrich and Murdock lost in the third set, 15-8.
