LA JOLLA, Calif. — Nathanael Litwiller finished first in the men's 800 and Caprice Powell won the women's 100 to lead the Sacramento State track & field team at the Cal-Nevada Championships on Saturday.
The Hornet men finished third in the competition while the women placed fifth. Long Beach State and San Diego State won the men's and women's titles, respectively.
Litwiller captured the 800 after running 1:51.10 to edge UC San Diego's Jared Sense by .52 seconds. Litwiller's time was his fastest since setting the school record of 1:48.35 en route to earning honorable mention All-America honors in 2011.
Powell finished first in the 100 with a time of 11.90. Her time was the fastest non-wind aided time of her career and beat her season best by .12 seconds.
The Hornet men also had 10 other individuals score points toward the team total and two post top 10 marks in Sacramento State history. In the discus, James January and Matthew Sepulveda each set career bests. January threw 163-04 to place fifth and record the eighth longest throw by a Hornet. Sepulveda was ninth in the meet with a best of 158-05 which moved him into 10th place in the school record book.
Londeen McCovery and Billy Eng each scored in the high jump and Gathunga Ndirangu and McCovery placed in the triple jump. McCovery tied for second in the high jump after clearing 6-06.75 and was sixth in the triple jump at 46-00.00. Eng cleared 6-04.76 to finish fifth in the high jump while Ndirangu was fourth in the triple at 46-11.75.
On the track, Casey Wheeler finished third the 400-hurdles (53.46) and was eighth in the 110-hurdles (15.10). Evan Meehan was fourth in the 100 after running 10.77 and eighth in the 200 (22.06). The men's 4x100 relay team of Michael Turner, Osaretin Ogbeide, Bryan Cuellar and Meehan provided the final points by placing third in 41.39.
The women scored in nine individual events and both relays. In the field events, Kassandra Corrigan high jumped 5-04.25 to place sixth and Morgan Laney was seventh in the shot put at 43-03.00.
Dominique Whittington was second in the 400 with a season best of 54.92 and Arrielle Holzendorf was seventh (57.45). Freshman Kristen Robinson ran 14.01 to finish third in the 100-hurdles and record the second fastest time in the Big Sky this season. Powell added to her victory in the 100 by placing eighth in the 200 (25.12). Devin Collins ran 1:01.58 to place fifth in the 400-hurdles and Amanda Garcia was seventh in the 800 (2:17.85).
Both women's relay teams were able to score points. Robinson, Morgan Pope, Brianna Cole and Whittington were second in the 4x100 (46.52). The team battled champion Long Beach State in the second heat before being edged by .02 seconds. Joy Weems, Cole, Collins and Whittington were third in the 4x400 in 3:45.11. That time is the seventh fastest in school history.
Sacramento State returns home for the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge this week. The meet begins with the heptathlon and decathlon on Thursday and Friday. The main program will take place on Friday and Saturday at Hornet Stadium.
