DAVIS, Calif. — Senior Emily Kersting finished first in the javelin and tied for the second longest throw in school history to lead the Hornets at the Aggie Open on Saturday. The meet was the first outdoor competition of the year for the team.

Kersting threw 152-04 which moved her into a tie with Holly Fraser and Liz Parsley for second in the Hornet record book. The school record is currently held by Ashley Ast at 158-10.

Freshman Kristen Robinson also provided a victory for the Hornets in the 100-hurdles. Robinson ran 14.09 to finish .08 seconds ahead of teammate Devin Collins who was second.

Other top three finishers for the team included Morgan Pope (2nd, 12.02) and Caprice Powell (3rd, 12.04) in the 100; Brianna Cole (3rd, 56.89) in the 400 and Collins (3rd, 1:05.07) in the 400-hurdles. In the field events, Miranda Dumas placed third in the pole vault (11-05.75), Aysia Smith was third in the triple jump (37-04.50) and Kathleen Durand was third in the discus (132-04).

In the men's competition, Steven Pust defeated Brett Thompson in a jump off to finish first in the pole vault. Both cleared 15-00.00 in the competition before Pust was successful at 15-05.75. Freshman Richard Cooper long jumped 23-00.00 to finish first in his first collegiate event.

Trever Sitch came in third in the 400-hurdles with a time of 55.75 for the best individual finish on the track. Billy Eng was second in the high jump (6-02.75) and Matt Sepulveda was second in the discus (153-06) to account for the other top three finishers.

The meet was also scored in double duel format with the men and women each going 1-1. Both teams lost to UC Davis while the women had a win over Nevada and the men bettered San Francisco.

Sacramento State will next host the Hornet Invite on Saturday, March 22.
