SAN DIEGO – Sacramento State competed a varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and a second varsity four on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday at Crown Point Shores.
All four boats competed in heats that included multiple nationally ranked squads. In fact, the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four all raced against three nationally ranked schools in their heats.
Each of the Hornets' entires will compete in tomorrow's petite finals. That includes the varsity eight at 9:50 a.m., followed by the varsity four at 1:56 p.m., second varsity four (2:04 p.m.) and second varsity eight (2:12 p.m.).
Sacramento State's varsity eight had an impressive heat, finishing with a sub-6:40 time (6:39.18), and just a half boat length behind 20th-ranked Notre Dame's time of 6:36.98 and UCLA's time of 6:36.35. Fifth-ranked Washington finished first in the heat, followed by eighth-ranked Cal and UCLA to round out the top three. The V8 will compete against San Diego and Santa Clara in tomorrow's petite final.
The second varsity eight posted a 7:06.37 in a stacked heat that included top-ranked Texas, 23rd-ranked USC and 24th-ranked Washington State. In fact, that 7:06.37 was less than six seconds behind Washington State.
Both the Hornet varsity four and second varsity four also competed in a stacked heat. That included the varsity four racing against Texas, USC and Notre Dame. The second varsity four's heat included Notre Dame and a pair of crews from UCLA.
