ROWING WINS SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC CAL CUP FOR SECOND TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORY

SAN DIEGO -- Sacramento State's varsity eight won the San Diego Crew Classic's Cal Cup championship on Sunday morning at Crown Point Shores.

The Hornets' varsity eight finished over eight seconds faster than San Diego to claim just its second Cal Cup gold in program history, and first since 2000. In fact, the varsity eight medal was just the eighth in program history at the San Diego Crew Classic's Cal Cup race

Sacramento State competed in an eight-boat field, with five of those crews - including three nationally ranked teams - competing for the Jessop-Whitter Cup. The remaining field competed for the Cal Cup, which was easily won by Sacramento State. Race organizers combined the two competitions, which saw second-ranked Texas win the Jessop-Whittier.

All four of the Hornets' entries at the event - varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four - qualified for their respective grand finals in heat or prelims yesterday. This year's San Diego Crew Classic field included multiple ranked teams, including No. 2 Texas, No. 5 Washington and No. 10 Cal - not to mention UCLA and Washington State.

The other three Sacramento State crews finished sixth or seventh in their respective grand finals.

Sacramento State's varsity four placed sixth in its grand final, while the second varsity eight and second varsity four both placed seventh in their respective grand finals. All three finished behind at least three nationally ranked crews.

The Hornets do not compete again until racing at the Big Ten Invite at Lake Natoma April 18-19. The Hornets are in the WCC, but can still race at the Big 10s.
