ROWING WRAPS UP FINAL DAY OF WCC CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THREE PETITE FINAL WINS

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- In its second-ever appearance at the WCC Championship as a league affiliate, Sacramento State placed sixth out of 10 schools in the final team points standings on Saturday morning at Lake Natoma.

There were four race categories - V8, 2V8, V4 and 2V4 - at the WCC Championship which began yesterday with heat racing. Based on Friday's results, the Hornets advanced their varsity eight to the grand final, while the second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four each qualified for the petite final.

Sacramento State's varsity eight placed fifth in its grand final with a time of 7:02.29 over 2,000 meters. The Hornets had placed second in yesterday's heat racing to advance to the grand.

The Hornets' second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four each won their respective petite finals by open water. In fact, the varsity four won its race by 22 seconds, the second varsity four by 13 seconds, and the second varsity eight by 10 seconds. Each of those three Hornet boats placed fourth in yesterday's heat racing to narrowly miss advancing to their respective grand finals.

There are 10 rowing programs in the WCC, comprised of eight full-time members (Gonzaga, Oregon State, Portland, Saint Mary's, San Diego, Santa Clara, Seattle U and Washington State) as well as two affiliates in Creighton and Sacramento State.

All 10 schools competed in each of the four race categories, except Santa Clara and Seattle U did not field a boat in the second varsity four.

For the second straight year, Oregon State was crowned the WCC champion, and will gain the league automatic berth to the NCAA Championship, which takes place May 29-31 in Gainesville, Ga. Oregon State finished first in all four grand finals, and finished with the maximum 60 points.
