SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sacramento State played a pair of close matches at the inaugural San Jose Invitational on Saturday, but fell to host San Jose State (3-2) and Saint Mary's (4-1).
The Hornets saw their record fall to 5-7, while Saint Mary's improved to 8-5 and San Jose State 5-5.
In the matchup with San Jose State, the Hornets received wins at No. 1 from
Greta Davis/
Caitlin Volkmann (12-21, 21-19, 15-11) and at No. 3 from
Karlee Soderberg/
Mia Guevara (21-13, 21-19). Sacramento State, however, dropped the other three doubles matches, including tight contests at No. 4 from
Ashlynn Archer/
Hailey Plugge (19-21, 21-16, 15-11) and at No. 5
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin/
Abbey Kadillak (21-19, 21-16).
The duo of Davis/Volkmann, which is 5-2 this season, moved up to the No. 1 spot in the team's lineup for the first time against San Jose State and responded with a win. Individually, Davis, Volkmann and
Ellie Tisko are each 8-4 this season.
In the loss to Saint Mary's, Kamba-Griffin/Kadillak pulled out the lone win at No. 5 by a 21-15, 21-18 score.
Kalani Hayes/Tisko fell in three sets at No. 1 by a 15-21, 21-18, 15-12 score.
Sacramento State is back for its final match at the two-day tournament tomorrow morning against Utah at 9 a.m.
