TRACK & FIELD ADDS TWO MORE SCHOOL TOP 10 PERFORMANCES TO CLOSE UW INVITATIONAL

SEATTLE — The Sacramento State track and field team added two more school top 10 marks during the second day of the UW Invitational on Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor Facility. The two marks give the team eight top 10 performances through the first two weeks of the 2024 season.

Jessi Barry moved into fourth place in the 60-meter dash at Sacramento State and recorded the third-fastest 60 in the Big Sky Conference this season. Barry ran 7.92 in the qualifying round and then followed with a 7.55 in the finals to place fourth overall at the meet. Their time was a tenth of a second faster than their previous best which came last week.

The second top 10 performance came from Tamia Ramos in the women's long jump. Ramos had a long of 19-02.50 which crushed her previous indoor best of 17-08.00 by 18.5 inches and placed her second in the meet. Ramos is now tied for eighth place in school history and moves into third place in the Big Sky this season.

Mia Lawrence and Breija Stredic also posted times in the 800 and 400, respectively, that would place them among the top 10 in the Big Sky entering this weekend. Lawrence ran 2:12.68 in the 800 to take nearly two seconds off her previous best. Her time ranks fifth in the conference this year. Stredic was sixth in the 400 on Saturday in 56.90 which ranks 10th in the Big Sky in 2024.

The meet concluded with dozens of heats of the mile where all five Hornet entries in the women's competition either set career bests or were competing in the event for the first time in their careers. A day after running the seventh fastest 3K in school history, Dani Gee led the quintet in 5:04.31 for a nine-second plus PR. Viviana Valenton (5:10.81) lowered her PR by almost eight seconds while Tia Oliver (5:21.56) took and incredible 28.4 seconds off her previous best.

The other PR for the women came in the long jump where Kasee Aczon had a best of 17-11.50.

In the men's races, Zachary Winger and Xavier Bruce each recorded career bests in the 60. Winger, who claimed the fourth-fastest 60-hurdles in Hornet history on Friday, ran 7.03 in the 60 on Saturday. Bruce was close behind in 7.04 seconds.

Malachi Cox placed eighth overall in the 400 in 49.01 which places him ninth in the Big Sky this season. Nathan Rider was second on the team with a career best time of 49.35.

Mason Mitchell finished in fifth place in the long at 22-10.75 which was just shy of his season best of 23-01.75. John Gibbs tied his career best of 22-06.50 to place ninth in the meet and rank seventh in the Big Sky.

The Hornets will return to the Pacific Northwest next weekend for the three-day Riverfront Invitational in Spokane, Wash., beginning on Friday, Feb. 1.
