TRACK & FIELD DODGES WEATHER TO START OUTDOOR SEASON STRONG

Team posts 25 top three finishes at Aggie Open

DAVIS, Calif. — Competing in heavy rain at times during the day, the Sacramento State track and field teams still managed to record 11 personal bests and gained valuable experience for several newcomers at the Aggie Open on Saturday at UC Davis.

The Hornet women finished second in the team competition with 179 points, trailing only UC Davis (219). The men's team scored 82 points to finish third behind UCD (146) and American River (134).

Women's Track Highlights
  • The Hornet women won three running events with Viviana Valenton winning the 1500, Daysha Ford the 100 and Tia Oliver the 2,000-meter steeplechase. Valenton and freshman Kaleena Narus finished 1-2 in the 1500 in times of 4:46.07 and 4:47.51, respectively.
  • Ford and Kameryn Brown also claimed the top two spots in the 100. Ford ran 12.30 to easily when the event while Brown had a PR of 12.77 — taking .24 seconds off her career best.
  • The Hornets had three of the top four times in the 2K steeplechase. Oliver paced the group in 7:23.37 and was immediately followed by Valenton (7:24.33). Narus was fourth in 7:43.23.
  • Madison Burciaga set a PR of 2:27.18 in the 800 and Katrina Kohlmeyer set her career best in the 1500 (5:03.17).

Men's Track Highlights
  • The Hornet middle distance runners picked up three PRs in the 1500. Aiden Maddison finished third at the meet in 3:56.78 for a full second improvement. Santiago Ruiz ran 4:04.65 to take nearly 13 second off his previous best and Kelly Galicia-Thomas had a time of 4:10.63 for a near six-second betterment.
  • Maddison returned to place fourth in the 800 in 1:59.94 with Ruiz less than a second behind in sixth place.
  • The Hornet men swept the relays winning the 4x100 in 42.30 and the 4x400 in 3:22.95.

Women's Field Highlights
  • Just a couple of weeks after winning the Big Sky indoor title in the pentathlon, Eliana Coburn started the outdoor season with a victory in the javelin. Coburn threw 120-00 to win the meet and record a significant improvement over her previous best of 114-03.
  • Abby Meder dominated the throws, finishing first in the shot put, second in the discus and third in the hammer. Meder set her PR in the hammer throw on Friday with a best of 154-06. She started Saturday with a discus toss of 129-11 and won the shot put at 41-07.75.
  • Tamia Ramos claimed a victory in the triple jump and shattered her previous best. Ramos had a best of 38-04.00 which easily topped her best of 32-05.50 set last season.
  • Freshmen R'kai Davis and Isabelle Rasmussen finished in the top eight of the long jump. Davis was second overall with a long of 17-06.25. Kasee Aczon also set a PR in the event at 16-07.75.
  • Other top three performances for the women came from Izzi Leonard in the high jump (second place, 5-05.25) and Hope Gordon in the shot put (second place, 41-03.25).

Men's Field Highlights
  • The Hornet men recorded a top three finish in each field event in which they competed. John Gibbs had the highest placement on the team by clearing 6-02.75 to finish second in the high jump.
  • John Maka returned to competition for the first time since 2021 and finished third in the hammer and discus. Make threw the hammer 147-11 on Friday and had a discus throw of 139-02 on Saturday.
  • In the men's long jump, Devin Gandy made his collegiate debut and finished third with a best of 21-09.50. Zachary Winger was fourth at 20-10.50 in his first outdoor collegiate meet.
