SPOKANE, Wash. — Alyssa Brewer made her Hornet debut in dramatic fashion as the senior finished first in the women's 800 at the Washington State Invite on Friday. Brewer had a time of 2:09.69 which is the third fastest in school school history and the fourth best in the Big Sky Conference.
Brewer's time leaves her trailing only former All-Americans Lea Wallace and Renisha Robinson in the Sacramento State record book. The senior won Friday's race by nearly a second over Arizona's Alisa Lyesina (2:10.63).
The Hornet women also had top 10 finishes from
Abby Meder in the weight throw and
Izzi Leonard in the high jump. Meder, who moved into eighth place in school history in her last meet, threw 54-11.50 to finish eighth. Leonard was 10th in the high jump at 5-04.50.
In the men's races,
Santiago Ruiz completed his first indoor 5K in 15:06.18 to finish in ninth place. He was trailed by
Aiden Maddison who took nearly 20 seconds off his career best with a time of 15:17.54. Both times landed the two among the top 10 in school history with Ruiz now ranking sixth and Maddison seventh.
Mason Mitchell and
John Gibbs were eighth and ninth, respectively in the long jump. Mitchell jumped 22-05.25 while Gibbs had a best of 22-01.00. The team's other top 10 finish came in the high jump where
Miles Grant was just off his career best with a clearance at 6-08.00.
Overall the team saw 10 personal bests during the day. The meet will continue on Saturday.
