Saturday's results/Sunday's schedule
GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four each posted top three finishes in their respective heats on the first day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship on Saturday morning at Lake Natoma.
All three of those Hornet boats will advance to tomorrow morning's grand finals. The Hornets' varsity eight placed first in its heat, the second varsity eight finished second, and the varsity four posted a third place finish.
The WIRA Championship, long an annual event on Sacramento State's schedule, has not run each of the last two years because of the pandemic. The event is back this year for the first time since 2019.
Sacramento State's varsity eight finished first in its heat with a 6:43.82, and will race in tomorrow's grand final at 8:20 a.m. The Hornets finished nearly four seconds ahead of San Diego (6:47.75), and open water in front of UC San Diego, Seattle, Santa Clara and Saint Mary's.
The Hornet second varsity eight placed second in its head with a time of 7:06.62, narrowly trailing San Diego (7:04.11). Sacramento State, which finished over eight seconds faster than third place UC San Diego, will race in tomorrow's five-boat grand final at 9 a.m.
Sacramento State's varsity four (8:47.72) placed third in its heat behind San Diego and UC San Diego, and will compete in tomorrow's grand final at 10:20 a.m.
The Hornets were competing today for the first time since the San Diego Crew Classic on March 26-27.
