NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Four Sacramento State women's tennis players finished with victories in two of their three singles contests played over the weekend as the Hornets wrapped up the fall portion of their 2022-23 schedule at the CSUN Fall Invitational in Northridge, Calif.
Playing a "hidden dual" format where teams faced different opponents in singles and doubles play, Sacramento State posted wins as a team in singles play against Youngstown State (4-2) and Utah State (4-3), while falling to Bay Area rival San Jose State (4-2). In doubles play, the Hornets opened with a win over the CSUN "Red" squad, 2-1, but fell to Big Sky Conference rival Idaho (2-1) and the Spartans (4-0).
Junior Tsveti Yotova, sophomore Maddy Ferreros, and newcomers Mayya Gorbunova and Lou Baudouin, each finished 2-1 in singles play over the weekend, with newcomer Julia Moraes and sophomore Weronika Ejsmont also picking up singles victories. The doubles tandems of Yotova and Gorbunova, Ferreros and Baudouin, and Ejsmont and Moraes, also picked up wins in doubles during the three-day event.
Baudouin, who wrapped up her fall schedule with an 11-4 record in singles, sandwiched wins over Youngstown State's Julia Marko (6-2, 6-2) and Utah State's Lisa Kung (6-1, 6-2) around a three-set defeat to San Jose State's Alba Pedrero Galindo (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) at the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
Playing at the No. 1 position, Gorbunova opened her weekend with a singles win over the Penguins' Lili Minich (6-2, 6-4) and added a straight-set win over the Aggies' Zeynep Naz Ozturk (6-4, 6-1), while falling to the Spartans' Carolina Millan (6-3, 6-3) in straight sets.
Ferreros, who spent the weekend at the No. 2 spot in the Hornets lineup, began the tournament with a straight-set win over YSU's Elisa Rigazio (6-2, 6-3) and defeated Utah State's Monique Burton (6-4, 6-4), while falling to SJSU's Irena Muradyan (6-2, 6-4).
Yotova then completed the quartet with an opening day win over Youngstown State's Cecilia Rosas in three sets (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) and posted one of the Hornets' two singles wins over the Spartans with a 6-4, 7-5, triumph over Raquel Villan Pereria, before falling to Utah State's Annaliese County, 6-4, 7-5.
Ejsmont's win came against San Jose State's Lara Marcos Mas, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3, while Moraes claimed her victory over the Aggies' Jade Brilhante, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles, the duos of Ferreros and Baudouin and Ejsmont and Moraes powered Sacramento State to the win over CSUN's split squad "Red" team, both finishing with a 6-2 victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup. Saturday, the tandem of Yotova and Gorbunova posted a shutout over the Vandals' Selin Sepken and Jayanne Palma, 6-0, earning their team-best seventh win of the fall as a pair.
Sacramento State now breaks until the start of its spring dual match season, opening the year on the road at Fresno State on Jan. 22 before three straight matches at home against San Jose State (Jan. 28) and a doubleheader against Fresno Pacific and Academy of Art (Feb. 4).
