FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Sacramento State indoor track and field teams opened their 2022 season with 19 top five finishes and seven school top 10 records at the Lumberjack Challenge on Friday at Northern Arizona. The Hornet women finished tied for second in the team scored meet while the men were fourth.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Washington State Invite in Spokane, Wash., on Feb. 4-5.
WOMEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS
- LaTrouchka Duke finished first in the 200 and was third in the 60 in her indoor debut. The redshirt freshman ran 24.92 in the 200 to win the event by .27 seconds. The time also moved her into a tie for 10th place in school history. Duke ran 7.58 in the both the qualifying round and the final of the 60. She moved into fifth place in program history with the effort.
- Sarah Collier and Mia Lawrence placed second and third, respectively in the 600. Collier ran 1:38.67 while Lawrence had a time of 1:39.23.
- The women's 4x400 relay team was third in 4:10.42.
MEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Blaize Holland made a smooth transition from NCAA Div. II to DIv. I by placing among the top three in both the 60 and the 200. Holland ran 6.83 in the finals of the 60 to finish second. His time is the fifth fastest in school history and was the best by a Hornet since Andy White (6.70) and Ronald Brookins (6.82) on Feb. 26, 2011. He ran 21.79 in the 200 to finish third overall and jump into fifth place in program history.
- The men's 4x400 relay team was third with a time of 3:31.94
WOMEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS
- The Hornets had two of the top three finishers in the shot put. Shantel Nnaji was second with a career best of 49-02.50 which was 14.75 inches beyond her previous long and moved her into fourth place in school history. Abby Meder was third in the event at 43-04.50.
- Meder led the team in the weight throw with a PR of 53-05.50. That throw marked the first time Meder crossed over 50-feet in her career.
- Freshman Jayla Flowers was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 37-06.00 in her first collegiate competition.
MEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS
- Redshirt freshman Sawyer Howard was second in the shot put with a mark of 53-10.50 in his first collegiate indoor meet. Howard is now tied for sixth place in school history and owns the best mark by a Hornet in the last four years.
- Evan Stork placed third in the weight throw with a PR of 63-00.25 to jump to fourth place in the Hornet record book. Stork improved his previous best by 15.25 inches.
- Senior transfer George Harris was fourth in the shot put and eighth in the weight throw. Both marks were indoor career bests.
- John Gibbs was third in the triple jump with a best of 45-07.25.
- Jaren Johnson was fourth in the long jump at 21-10.75.
- Miles Grant was fourth in the high jump after clearing 6-07.00. That height left him just a half-inch shy of cracking the top 10 in school history.
