VOLLEYBALL WINS ON THE ROAD, SWEEPS EASTERN WASHINGTON

Box Score

CHENEY, Wash. -- Sacramento State hit .287 while limiting Eastern Washington to a .135 mark and the Hornets picked up a three-set road sweep (25-22, 25-20, 25-19) of the Eagles on Thursday evening at Reese Court.

It marked the first win of the season on an opponent's home floor, and Sacramento State improved to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets were playing the third leg of a four-match road trip to begin the conference season. That road swing ends on Saturday at Idaho. The Hornets opened the conference season last week at Idaho State and Weber State.

Eastern Washington, which had won two of its last three, dropped to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in league play. Sacramento State has now won nine of the last 10 meetings between the two schools, including four straight in Cheney.

The Hornets had 39 kills with just eight errors while Eastern Washington had 36 kills and 21 errors. Sacramento State had 11.0 team blocks despite the match lasting just three sets while also finishing with 48 assists and four aces. The Hornets led the majority of the match with their largest deficit coming at 10-8 of the first set. The team never trailed in the second set, and trailed just once in the third.

Sacramento State had three players hit better than .400. That included rightside hitter Karlee Soderberg who hit a career-best .500 with eight kills and five blocks. Middle blocker Cianna Andrews, who has battled injuries throughout the season, was also impressive, finishing with seven kills, a .429 hitting percentage and four blocks. Outside hitter Bridgette Smith led all players with 11 kills, and did not commit an attack error while hitting .367. Smith, who has tallied double digits in kills in four straight matches, also had half of the Hornets' four aces.

Libero Caty Cordano finished with 18 digs, seven more than any other player from either team. After missing the previous two matches with injury, outside hitter Caitlin Volkmann had seven kills, and setters Ashtin Olin (18 ast, 7 digs) and McKenna Smith (13 ast, 10 digs) combined for 31 assists. Kalani Hayes had four kills and five blocks, Macey Hayden six digs and Ellie Tisko two kills.

Eastern Washington did not have any player finish with more than eight kills, and only one - Makenna Collins (11) - posted double figures in digs.

Sacramento State wraps up the road trip on Saturday with a matchup at Idaho at 1 p.m.
