HILLSBORO, Ore. — Cagnei Duncan led the Sacramento State women's cross country team and Shane Marshall had the fastest time for the men at the 2021 Big Sky Championships on Friday at Meriwether National Golf Club. The Hornet women finished in eighth place while the men were 10th.
Duncan ran the third-fastest time in school history at the Big Sky Championships, crossing in 17:21.9. That time placed her 25th overall but left her nearly 50 seconds off the pace of Taryn O'Neil of NAU who won the race in 16:31.6.
Rachel Victor ranked second on the team with a time of 17:43.5 to place 38th. Victor's time was the 11th fastest in school history at the meet. The next three finishers for the team all had times within 14 seconds of each other. Tia Oliver led the trio in 18:18.3 to finish in 53rd place. Danielle Gee was 59th in 18:30.3 and Hailey Rutter ran 18:31.7 to place 60th.
Marshall finished in 51st place in the men's race with a time of 25:31.2. That time was the 11th fastest in school history and the best by a Hornet at the Big Sky Championships since 2018. Aiden Maddison ranked second on the team and was 54th overall in 25:40.6 which moved him into 14th place in program history.
Ruben Garcia and Jake Slade accounted for the next two times for the men. Garcia had a time of 26:18.9 to place 64th with Slade just over 20 seconds back in 26:41.3 to finish 70th. Santiago Ruiz completed the team score by finishing in 75th in 26:53.4.
Northern Arizona won both team titles. The NAU women scored 37 points and were followed by Weber State (51) and Portland State (96). The Lumberjack men totaled 30 points with Southern Utah (53) and Montana State (80) completing the top three.
Sacramento State will next compete at the NCAA West Regional which will be held at Haggin Oaks GC on Friday, Nov. 12.
