MARTIN, HARMON LEAD CROSS COUNTRY AT SANTA CLARA BRONCO INVITATIONAL

Women fourth, men 12th in final race before conference meet

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Ryan Martin ran a career-best time in the men's 8K race and Anna Harmon guided three Sacramento State women in the top 25 of the 6K race at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Saturday at Baylands Park.
 
Martin completed the men's race with a time of 23:55.1 That mark placed him sixth overall and was the fourth-fastest among collegiate finishers. The time was also 18 seconds faster than his previous 8K best. Martin was just 12 seconds behind the winner, UC Santa Barbara's Zachary Parker (23:43.4).
 
Brandon Moreno ranked second among the Hornet men with a time of 25:06.1 to place 59th. Koby Sperandeo was third on the team after running 25:51.3 to finish in 102nd place. The trio of Martin, Moreno and Sperandeo have finished 1-2-3 on the team in every meet this season.
 
The men's team total was completed by Nathan Diaz and Noak Mikusevich. Diaz, who was competing for the second time this season, ran 26:19.2. Mikusevich had a time of 27:25.5.
 
Southern Utah won the men's team title with 68 points. The Thunderbirds had four runners among the top 30 scorers. UC Santa Barbara was second with 76 points while Long Beach State was third at 85. Sacramento State finished in 12th place with 318 points.
 
Harmon finished in eighth place in the women's 6K race after running 21:04.8. The finish was the best for Harmon this season and placed her 58 seconds off the winning time of Santa Clara's Milaina Almonte (20:06.5).
 
Kate Sanders used a career-best 6K time of 21:24.3 to rank second on the team and place 21st overall. Sanders was able to take six seconds off her previous best. Marina Lipary was just over three seconds off the pace of Sanders to place 25th in 21:27.7.
 
Tia Oliver finished in 32nd place with a time of 21:32.7 while Dakota Gibson gave the team its fifth time in 22:09.9 to finish in 67th place.
 
As a team, the Hornets finished in fourth place with 137 points. UC Santa Barbara took the team title with 69 points while Santa Clara (110) and Southern Utah (123) rounded out the top three.
 
Sacramento State will next compete at the Big Sky Championships on Nov. 1 in Bozeman, Mont.
