Box Score MOSCOW, Idaho -- Sacramento State trailed in sets, 2-0, and faced a 24-22 deficit in the fourth set before eventually outlasting Idaho, 3-2 (22-25, 23-25, 25-17, 27-25, 17-15), on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gym.
The Hornets saved those two match points in the fourth set, and relied heavily on the arm of outside hitter Caitlin Volkmann during the final stages of the frame. In fact, the sophomore accounted for each of the team's final five points of the fourth set (4 kills, 1 ace). Two of those kills came at 22-24 and 23-24, and then her ace put the set away and forced a fifth.
If that wasn't enough, Volkmann had four more kills and an ace in the fifth set, and finished with career bests in kills (18) and digs (10). The fifth set wasn't without drama, as the Hornets, who never trailed by more than one point in the frame, took what appeared to be a commanding 14-11 lead. However, Idaho saved three match points to tie at 14-14. A kill from Volkmann was followed by a Travel Morris kill to push the score to 15-15. That's when Bridgette Smith connected on a kill, followed by a service ace from Kalani Hayes to end the match. The ace was the first of the Hayes' career.
Middle blocker Cianna Andrews was one of three Hornets with double-doubles as the senior had 12 kills and a career-best 10 blocks. She had two kills and two blocks in the fifth set, and the double-double was the first of her career. Andrews also hit .476 with just two errors in 21 attacks. The blocks and hitting percentage were match highs. She is now hitting .512 with averages of 2.36 kills and 1.64 blocks vs. Big Sky competition.
The win allowed the Hornets to sweep this week's road matches, which included a three-set victory over Eastern Washington on Thursday. The Hornets are now 7-7 overall and 2-2 in league play, and all four of those conference matches have come on the road. Sacramento State, one of two teams in the Big Sky to play its first four conference matches on the road (Portland State), also completed a stretch of six straight games away from home.
Idaho dropped to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in league. Never an easy place to play, the Hornets won on the Vandals' home floor for the first time since 2017. Each of the last seven meetings between the two teams have been decided in four or five sets.
Sacramento State held advantages in every statistical category, including kills (66-57), hitting percentage (.226-.197), aces (10-8) and blocks (12-11). The aces were the third highest total of the season for Sacramento State, and the Hornets found a way to win the fourth set despite Idaho hitting .321 in the frame. Seven different Sacramento State players had at least one ace.
Joining Volkmann and Andrews with a double-double was Smith who had 16 kills, 10 digs and an ace. That included two kills and five digs in the fifth set. She now has posted double figures in kills in five straight matches. Rightside hitter Karlee Soderberg had another strong match, finishing with 10 kills and six blocks, including two stuffs in the fifth.
Libero Caty Cordano had a match-high 19 digs, and setters McKenna Smith (28 assists, 8 digs, 2 aces) and Ashtin Olin (30 assists, 6 digs, 2 aces) combined for 58 assists, 14 digs and four aces. Hayes had seven kills and the ever-important ace, and Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin posted two kills and a block.
For Idaho, Morris led the way with 11 kills, three blocks and a .381 hitting percentage, Delaney Nicoll had 15 kills and 16 digs, but was held to a .167 hitting percentage.
Sacramento State will now play two straight, and seven of the next nine matches at home. That stretch begins next week with matchups in the Nest vs. Northern Arizona on Thursday at 7 p.m., and Southern Utah on Saturday at 1 p.m.
