Box Score BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Montana State hit .370 and had 23 more kills than Sacramento State on the way to a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-14, 25-13) victory over the Hornets on Thursday evening at Shroyer Gym.
The Bobcats had 70 kills with just 16 errors in 146 attacks. The hitting percentage is easily the highest of the season for a Big Sky opponent against the Hornets, as the Bobcats hit at least .297 in all four sets. The previous high for a league foe was .233 by Weber State on Sept. 25. MSU also had 21 more digs than the Hornets (70-49) while Sacramento State was limited to a .217 hitting percentage.
With the victory, the Bobcats improved to 9-9 overall and 5-2 in the Big Sky. The Hornets had won six of the last seven meetings in Bozeman prior to this evening. With the loss, Sacramento State dropped to 8-9 overall and 3-4 in league. The Hornets will complete their Treasure State trip on Saturday with a matchup at Montana on Saturday at 6 p.m. PDT.
Despite the statistical disparity between the two teams, Sacramento State could have easily started this match with a 2-0 lead. In fact, in the first set, the Hornets trailed just 23-22, but Sacramento State lost the set on the service line as a costly Hornet service error followed by an MSU ace concluded the frame. At 24-23 of the second set, a Kalani Hayes kill ended things and tied the match at 1-1.
Of the six Montana State starters, four had double figures in kills, and all four hit better than .330. That included Jourdain Klein's 13 kills and .500 hitting percentage. Kira Thomsen added 18 kills, 18 digs and a .333 mark.
For Sacramento State, outside hitter Bridgette Smith led the way with team highs in kills (13) and digs (12). Middle blocker Cianna Andrews had 10 kills, four blocks and a .381 hitting percentage while fellow middle Kalani Hayes posted seven kills, three blocks and hit .385. Outside hitter Caitlin Volkmann added nine kills and two blocks, and rightside hitter Karlee Soderberg posted five kills and three stuffs.
Setter Ashtin Olin had 28 assists and eight digs, and libero Michelle Taynton finished with 10 digs.
