SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Sacramento State played three matches on Saturday at the WCC/Big West Beach Volleyball Challenge, falling to Saint Mary's (5-0), San Francisco (3-2) and Santa Clara (4-1) at Santa Cruz's beach courts.
With the three losses, the Hornets dropped to 1-5 on the season while Saint Mary's is now 4-4, Santa Clara moved to 3-10 and San Francisco is 1-7.
Against San Francisco, the Hornets received wins at No. 2 Macey Hayden/Paige Swinney (21-18, 21-17) as well as the No. 3 team of McKenna Smith and Claudia Wilson in 3 sets (25-23, 15-21, 15-9). However, Sacramento State lost the other three doubles matches in straight sets to allow the Dons to win, 3-2.
The No.1 team of Sarah Davis/Ashtin Olin were the only pair to win against Santa Clara (25-23, 21-17). At No. 2, Hayden/Swinney went to a third set but fell short (13-21, 22-20, 11-15), the No.4 pair of Sarah Falk/Paige Calvin went to three sets but also fell short in a close match (18-21, 21-12, 13-15). Santa Clara would win the match, 4-1.
Sacramento State returns to action at home in Folsom on Thursday vs Stephen F. Austin at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday vs Pacific for a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
