PISMO BEACH, Calif. — Sacramento State lost a pair of matches on the second day of the Big West Conference Beach Volleyball Challenge on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets fell in their first match of the day to CSU Bakersfield, 4-1, before losing to ninth-ranked Long Beach State by a 5-0 score.

The three-day event, which began yesterday, features all seven teams in the Big West playing six times over three days. Sacramento State opened the tournament with losses yesterday to UC Davis and seventh-ranked Cal Poly. During the tourney, the Hornets will play three teams ranked nationally in the AVCA top 10, and that includes tomorrow's matchup with 6th-ranked Hawai'i at 12 p.m. The Hornets will also take on Cal State Northridge tomorrow at 2 p.m.

The losses dropped Sacramento State to 1-10. Long Beach State improved to 15-4, and CSU Bakersfield 6-10 with the victories. For the second straight day, the Hornets were playing without Paige Swinney (injury) who usually plays at No. 3 in the team's lineup.

The Bakersfield match was closer than the final score indicated as Sacramento State lost three-set battles at both the Nos. 1 and 4 spots. That included a 21-19, 11-21, 15-13 loss by Mikaela Nocetti and Sarah Davis at No. 1. The Hornets' lone win of the day came at No. 2 where Skyler Takeda and Ashtin Olin were victorious by a 21-19, 20-22, 15-7 score. Hannah Chase and Macey Hayden lost at No. 4 by a 17-21, 21-18, 15-8 score.

Each of the doubles matches against Long Beach State lasted two sets.
