SACRAMENTO — Sacramento State right-hander Savanna Corr tossed a one-hit shutout against Rider, highlighting a Saturday afternoon that saw the Hornets split a pair of games on the second day of the Capital Classic Softball Tournament. After losing in the final inning to Santa Clara, 4-3, Sacramento State bounced back to defeat Rider, 6-0.

The Hornets are now 3-1 at the three-day event, which includes wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Marist yesterday. The Hornets moved their record to 14-12 this season.

In today's games, Sacramento State's pitching staff combined to post a 1.02 ERA, which included allowing just seven hits in 13.2 innings. The offense hit .320 with a pair of home runs and nine RBIs. That includes four hits apiece from senior Krystal Aubert and junior Suzy Brookshire. Both connected for home runs, the sixth of the season for Aubert and fifth for Brookshire. Corr pitched in both games, and allowed just two hits in 7.2 innings, and Danielle Sperry did not allow an earned run over four innings.

GAME 2

Corr was nearly untouchable against Rider (1-15), which had just one single in seven innings against the fourth-year senior. Corr's only hit allowed was a single in the second inning, she faced just four batters mover the minimum and needed 90 pitches to toss her fifth shutout of the season. She did not allow a hit after the second inning, and retired the final eight batters of the game in succession. In fact, she allowed just one runner past first base the entire game.

While Corr was dominant in the circle, Sacramento State's offense accounted for six runs on six hits. The big blow was a Suzy Brookshire two-run homer over the center field wall in the fifth inning. The Hornets scored three times in the first and three more in the fifth.

The Hornets got their runs in the first inning via RBI-single from Aubert, and a two-out, two-run double from Alondra Mejia which plated both Brookshire and Aubert. Sydney Rasmussen walked early in the inning and eventually came around to score.

The fifth inning runs came from Brookshire's two-run homer and a sacrifice fly from Jessica Scott scoring Katie Vretzos.

Corr improved to 11-7 with the victory while Brooklyn Trujillo (1-5) got the loss for Rider, allowing six hits and six runs with six walks over 4.1 innings.

Brookshire (2-for-3 with a homer, two runs and two RBIs) and Aubert (2-for-4 with a run and RBI) both had multiple-hit games for Sacramento State.

GAME 1

Sacramento State outhit Santa Clara, 10-6, but the Broncos squeaked out a 4-3 victory over the Hornets. Santa Clara (7-14), which was the designated home team despite the game being played at Shea Stadium, received a two-out, walkoff RBI-single from Sammy Needham to pull out the win. Sacramento State had just tied the game in the top of the seventh after Rasmussen's sacrifice fly scored Nene Alas.

The Hornets' only lead of the game was 1-0 after Rasmussen doubled home pinch runner Kayla Grubert in the third inning. However, Santa Clara scored twice in the third and once more in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Sacramento State, however, got a solo homer from Aubert in the sixth and Rasmussen's sac fly in the seventh to tie.

In the bottom of the seventh, with two outs and no one on base, the Broncos got back-to-back walks, followed by Needham's RBI-single to right field on an 0-2 pitch to end the game. The hit by Needham was part of a 2-for-3 day with three RBIs.

Sacramento State had hits from seven different players, including multiple-hit games from Aubert, Brookshire and Sydnee Strong. Rasmussen finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. The Hornets had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth inning, had a runner thrown out at third base trying to go from first to third on a single in the fifth, and stranded six runners on base.

Corr got the loss in relief, allowing one hit and one run over two-thirds of an inning. Danielle Sperry (4.0 ip, 3 h, 2 r, 0 er) and Jensen Main (2.0 ip, 2 h, 1 r) combined to pitch the first six innings of the game. Lauren Schiek (1-0) got the win in relief for Santa Clara.
