Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Trailing 3-1 halfway through singles play, Sacramento State won at No. 6, 5, and 1 to complete a 4-3 comeback victory over San Diego State in a non-conference match Friday in San Diego.
Sacramento State (4-8) also rallied in doubles play to earn the point after the Aztecs took the first match to finish. San Diego State (5-10) won the first three singles matches to finish before the Hornets came back for a 4-3 win.
In doubles, the Aztecs took the No. 1 match 6-3 before sophomore Sofia Wicker and redshirt freshman Carolina Chernyetsky picked up a 6-4 win at No. 3. At No. 2 doubles, senior Andie Mouzes and freshman Karina Vyrlan outlasted Kennedy Davis and Mia Smith, 6-3, to give the Hornets the first point of the match.
San Diego State came out strong in singles, winning in straight sets at No. 2, 3, and 4. At No. 6, Hornet freshman Sofia Gulnova pulled out a 6-4, 6-2 win. The Hornets tied the match at No. 5 when Wicker completed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Berta Acero.
The match came down to the No. 1 singles match, and Hornet junior Ana Loaiza Esquivias improved to 9-1 at the top singles spot this season outlasting Jana Buth, 7-5, 7-6 (5) to give the Hornets the match.
Sacramento State plays another non-conference match in southern California on Saturday, playing at UC Irvine at 1:00 p.m.
