SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In what has the makings to be a wet weekend, the Sacramento State men's golf team will attempt to play the El Macero Classic on Friday-Sunday at El Macero CC. The tournament is scheduled to have single rounds all three days but thunderstorms are projected for the area on Friday and Saturday.

The tournament will be the final event for Sacramento State this season before the Big Sky Championships. The Hornets most recently placed seventh at the Seattle U Redhawks Invitational on Mar. 29-31 at Chambers Bay GC. Max Thomas and Jai Bahl each totated 216 to tie for 20th place. Thomas enters this week averaging 71.29 strokes per round. That mark ranks second in school history, trailing Ethan Davidson's average of 71.18 from 2021-22.

Sacramento State's team average of 287.04 strokes per round is the best in school history, nearly a full stroke ahead of the previous record of 288.03 from 2021-22.

The Last Time at the El Macero Classic

Zach Mate and Sacramento State tied for ninth place at the 2025 El Macero Classic. Mate shot 72-73-72-217 and finished 11 strokes ahead of the next Hornet. He led the team for the second time in three years at the event. UC San Diego edged Saint Mary's by one stroke and Pacific by two to win the team title. The medalist was USF's Oscar Holm-Bredkjaer who shot 71-69-70-210.
