MEN'S GOLF TIED FOR THIRD AFTER FIRST ROUND AT BANDON DUNES CHAMPIONSHIP

Matzke, Mate, Bahl and Benbrook all shoot even par or better

BANDON, Ore. — Four members of the Sacramento State men's golf team shot par or better to help the Hornets into a tie for third place after the first round of the Bandon Dunes Championship on Sunday. Sacramento State shot 5-under as a team and is tied for Utah Tech for third place. The pair trail Oregon State (21-under) and Oregon (16-under) at the top of the leaderboard.

The lowest score for the Hornets during the round belonged to Zach Matzke who shot 67 on the par-71 course while competing as a individual. Matzke was 1-over through his first two holes but dropped below par for the rest of the round with birdies on the par-4 second and par-5 third. He added another birdie on the par-4 eighth to get to 2-under before a bogey on the par-3 10th. A birdie on the par-5 12th and an eagle on the par-5 15th got him to 4-under for the round. His total ties him for sixth overall.

Zach Mate and Jai Bahl each posted rounds of 68 are tied for ninth overall. Mate was bogey free in his round with birdies on the par-5 third, par-4 sixth and par-5 12th. Bahl eagled the par-5 third and birdied No. 4 to get to 3-under through his first six holes. However, bogeys on Nos. 7, 8 and 11 placed him even before he responded with birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 15.

Mason Benbrook ranked third among players in the lineup with an ever-par 71. Bebrook started play with a birdie on the par-3 17th and added a birdie on the par-4 second. He remained two under through 16 holes following a bogey on No. 7 and a birdie on the par-3 14th. A double bogey on the par-5 15th moved him back to even and he closed the day with a par.

The final score toward the team total came from Gabriel Smith who shot 72 and is tied for 43rd. Smith scattered two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey over his 18 holes.

Max Thomas shot 73 and is tied for 53rd. Thomas tied for the team lead with four birdies but also had four bogeys and a double bogey.
