SMITH POSTS LOW SCORE FOR MEN'S GOLF IN SECOND ROUND OF NCAA CORVALLIS REGIONAL

Hornets wrap up the tournament on Wednesday

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Gabriel Smith led the Sacramento State men's golf team in the second round of the NCAA Corvallis Regional with a 2-over par round of 73 on Tuesday at Trysting Tree GC. The Hornets finished the day at 15-over par and are in 13th place with one round to play.

All five Sacramento State golfers started on the back nine on Tuesday and the team encountered early trouble, playing Nos. 10-12 at 9-over. Smith started with two pars but moved to 2-over after a double bogey on the par-4 12th. He returned to even with birdies on the par-5 14th and par-4 15th but followed with a double bogey on the par-5 16th. Smith was even over his final 11 holes with a bogey on No. 3 and a birdie on No. 5 to accompany nine pars.

Zach Matzke was one stroke behind Smith during the day. Matzke bogeyed Nos. 10 and 12 and recorded his first birdie on the par-3 13th. A bogey on the par-3 17th placed him at 2-over on the back nine and he slid to 3-over with a bogey and eight pars on the front side of the course.

Jai Bahl, Smith and Matzke are tied for 58th overall with a 36-hole total of 147. Bahl, who led the team with a 70 on Monday, shot 77 in the second round. He was 2-over through his first nine holes with a birdie on No. 16 and bogeys on Nos. 10, 12 and 18. Bahl carded seven consecutive bogeys to begin the front nine but ended with two straight double bogeys.

Max Thomas provided the final score towards the team total with a 75 in the second round. Thomas bogeyed Nos. 10 and 11 and made the turn at 1-over with the help of a birdie on the par-4 18th. He had a bogey on No. 2 and a double bogey on No. 9 to play the front nine at 3-over.

Oklahoma surged to the top of the leaderboard with a remarkable team score of 19-under during the round. The 17th-ranked Sooners are 28-under heading into the final round and have an eight-stroke lead over second-place Purdue and a 15-stroke advantage over third-place Oregon State. Ryder Cowan of Oklahoma took the lead in the individual standings at 9-under. Cowan has rounds of 67-66-133 to lead a pair of golfers by one stroke.

The top five teams and the best individual from a non-advancing team will move on to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship. Like Monday, Sacramento State will be paired with the 10 individuals in the field during the third round. The groups will tee off the first hole starting at 9:20 p.m.
