UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — The Sacramento State men's golf team is tied for seventh place after the first two rounds of the SeattleU Redhawks Invitational at Chambers Bay GC on Monday.
 
Sacramento State finished the first round at 8-over par as a team. The Hornets were led by Jai Bahl and Gabriel Smith who each finished with 2-uder par rounds of 70. Both golfers began in the seventh hole and were 1-over through four holes with bogeys on the par-3 ninth. Bahl did not record a bogey over the remainder of the round and added birdies on the par-4 14^th and 16^th and the par-5 fourth to get to 2-under.
 
Smith stood at 3-over following bogyes on Nos. 11 and 12 but worked his way back to even with birdies on Nos. 13, 17 and 18. Once back on the front side of the course, Smith birdied the par-5 first and par-4 second to move to 2-under. A bogey on No. 3 and a birdie on No. 5 were followed by two pars to close his round.
 
Max Thomas and Zach Mate added rounds of 76 in the morning to complete the team total. Thomas had two birdies and six bogeys in his round while Mate had a birdie, three bogeys and a double bogey.
 
In the second round, Zachary Matzke had an even-par 72 to pace the team. Matzke opened play with a bogey on the par-4 fifth but returned to even with a birdie on No. 9 and dropped to 2-under with a birdies on the par-3 15^th and par-4 16^th. Bogeys on Nos. 18 and 2 brought him back to even.
 
Thomas and Bahl were both 2-over in the second round. Thomas birdied the par-4 sixth to start his round. Three bogeys moved him to 2-over through eight holes. He parred his next seven holes before a birdie on No. 3.
 
Bahl sits in 15^th place for the highest standing on the team. He was 2-over through seven holes before playing his finial 11 holes even. During that last stretch he had two birdies and two bogeys.
 
Smith and Mate each shot 78 in the afternoon. Both had two birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey.
 
UC San Diego and Gonzaga are tied for the team lead at 2-under par with George Mason a stroke back. The Hornets finished the first day at 14-over.
