UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — The Sacramento State men's golf team counted four under-par scores and posted the second-lowest team total during the third round of the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational on Tuesday at Chambers Bay GC.

The Hornets were led by a 68 from
Max Thomas and counted a 69 from
Zach Mate and 70s from
Gabriel Smith and
Zach Matzke during the final round. The team total of 277 (11-under) is tied for the second-best mark by the squad this season.

Thomas moved up 11 spots in the standings and tied for 20
th place overall with scores of 76-72-68-216. He overcame a double bogey on his second hole with seven birdies over the next 15 holes holes.

Mate had his best round of the tournament and climbed 13 positions to tie for 43
rd. Mate was 1-over through his first 10 holes before returning to even with a birdie on the par-5 first. After four pars, he birdied his final three holes (Nos. 6-8).

Smith matched Thomas with a team-best seven birdies during the day. He ranged from 1-over to 3-under during parts of the round. The team total was completed by Matzke who used three birdies and a bogey to get to 2-under.

Jai Bahl recorded his highest finish as a Hornet as he tied for 20
th with scores of 70-74-72-216 to finish even. On Tuesday, Bahl had three birdies and three bogeys.

Abilene Christian won the tournament at 13-under. The Wildcats were the one team better that Sacramento State during the day, finishing the round at 17-under. Idaho was second at 9-8nder while UC San Diego was 7-under to place third.

Utah Tech's David Liecthy maintained his first day lead to win the individual title by eight strokes. Liecthy shot 70-64-66-200 to win by eight strokes.

The Hornets will next play at the El Macero Classic in Davis, Calif., before heading the Big Sky Championships on Apr. 27-29 in Arizona.
