BASEBALL FALLS IN KANSAS OPENER

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Senior Jace Jeremiah doubled and drew a walk to reach base safely for the 18th consecutive game while junior Jakob Poturnak extended his now team-high hitting streak to 11 games as the Sacramento State baseball team opened its five-game Midwest road trip with an 11-1 loss in seven innings to Kansas on Tuesday evening.

Jeremiah finished 1-for-2 on the night, drawing a walk in the fourth and dropping a double down the right field line in the sixth to extend his run of reaching base safely, collecting hits in 17 of those 18 contests. It is the longest single-season streak since Jorge Bojorquez did so in 19 straight in 2024.

Meanwhile, Poturnak led-off the fourth inning with a single to make it 11 straight with a hit and notch his 12th consecutive game reaching base safely. The 11-game run is the longest active streak by a Hornet after teammate Erick Dessens had his 12-game streak snapped on Tuesday.

Freshman Sam Harry and sophomore Jamie Mullin added the only other hits for the Hornets on the day with singles in the first and second innings, respectively.

Sacramento State (9-16) took advantage of a Jayhawk miscue to get on the scoreboard first in the opening frame as Harry reached on a single, moved to second on a ground ball, and scored when Poturnak's potential inning-ending grounder was thrown away, allowing Harry to score from second for the 1-0 lead.

Kansas (16-8) was stymied by Hornet starter Chase Sorlie, who did not allow a hit in 3.1 innings of work, working around three walks and a hit batter to strand three. He was stuck with the no decision, however, as the Jayhawks finally got on the board on a three-run home run off reliever Jackson Halverson (2-2) in the fourth to break up the no-hitter and take the lead for good.

Kansas then added five more runs in the fifth and three in the seventh to cap the scoring.

The Hornets had chances to tack on to their early lead, but stranded two in the second and two in the fourth en route to seven overall for the game.

Game two of the midweek series begins at 1 p.m. PT on Wednesday (March 25). Sacramento State then heads to Omaha, Neb., for a three-game weekend series at Creighton beginning Friday (March 27) and running through Sunday (March 29).
